Cleveland Transit System
"Airporter" # 161

CTS logo Airporter 161 was built in 1967 by the Pullman Standard Co. for the Cleveland Transit System’s rapid transit lines. In 1968 Cleveland became the first city in the US to have rapid transit access to its airport. At that time Cleveland purchased this fleet of cars to inaugurate the airport extension. The cars had a short service life because in the 1980's Cleveland ordered new cars from Tokyu Car company of Japan to replace all of the older equipment, including the newer Airporters.

RTA logo The CTS Rapid rail line was coined the Red Line after consolidation into the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority. All cars are high platform and use overhead for current collection. The Red Line shares some track with the former Shaker Heights Rapid Transit (RTA’s Green & Blue lines) that uses modern LRVs. The few stations that the routes share have both low level and high level platforms.
