Lake Shore Electric
Wood Coach # 149

LSE 149 was delivered in 1907 from the Niles Car Company of Niles, Ohio. By 1923 the Lake Shore Electric needed more seating capacity. So Car 149 went into the company shops and was lengthened to 60 feet. This shop surgery weakened the car’s structure, allowing it to twist and bend as the car ran down the track at speed. In honor of 149’s new operating characteristics, it was given the nickname Flexible Flyer. The Flexible Flyer was a kid’s sled popular in the trolley era. It steered by twisting the runners left or right.
