MINUTES
OF November 20, 2000 MEETING
Northfield Freight House
Steve
Flanders, Treasurer, the only officer present, opened the meeting at 7:30. Vice President Karl Smith arrived at 8:00
and assumed the chair.
Rail Corridor discussions:
- Manchester & Lawrence John Palmer reported on the restoration and
dedication of the milepost opposite the depot on Broadway in Derry. A legislative task force is being
formed to continue the focus on the M&L with an NHRRA member, probably
Bill Mosher who was not continued as a state rep., as an alternate member.
- Berlin Branch
Don
Provencher discussed the status of the right-of-way since the tracks were
lifted.
- Northern Line
Bill
Remington with Chuck Ross checked all the railroad bridges in Franklin,
Penacook, Webster Lake, Danbury, and bridge #140.83 on Rt 4 to
Lebanon. The latter bridge is
rotted beyond repair and should be removed as soon as possible. A motion was made and passed to pay
Chuck Ross a $100 gratuity for his support in the inspection. Jim Whitemore indicated there is no
current work going on between concord and White River Jct. But that the
bridge in Enfield is gone.
- Main Line West
Bill
Remington and Karl Smith led a discussion on signalling issues relating to
the Plaistow extension of the MBTA and the Portland run for Amtrak.
- Main Line East Karl Smith indicated that it appears as though Kittery, ME is not
interested in a rail extension into the factory store area.
Legislation The Liability Limitation bill will go before the
legislature in the next session. George
Katsakiores and others are also sponsoring a bill to obtain a $100 million
bonding authority to support railroad revitalization.
Other Discussions Guilford has been given a 20 minute time limit for
idling locomotives in Atkinson, Westford and Forge Village in the night-time,
because of noise and smell. A
suggestion was made that if railroads didn’t have to pay a fuel tax, the money
could be used for track maintenance.
Other Business The motion was made and passed to allow Don Provencher to see if
he could obtain some publicity from Channel 9 and the Union Leader.
The
meeting closed at 9:30 PM, following a brisk snowstorm, which started about an
hour earlier.
