Tomytec

Tomytec makes these models as unpowered plastic toy models complete with plastic wheels. The models generally come in sets or collections that are limited-time production runs. They are announced, reservations are taken, and they are manufactured. Thus only the most recent ones are generally available for retail sale, and the rest may appear from time to time second-hand. They are all listed here for reference.

While they are toys, these models are made to scale and are well detailed. They can easily be powered by removing the floor of the car and replacing it with a made-to-fit Tomytec TM-series powered chassis with flywheel drive. Trailers can be made operational by installing a Tomytec TT-series kit with metal wheelsets, a metal weight for the car, and couplers. The earliest power chassis (TM-01 through TM-04) have only one truck powered. They are still adequate for pulling a trailer or two on level track. The rest have 8-wheel drive and pickup, with dual flywheels. For more information of the TM-series power chassis, the TT-series trailer kits and the TD-series truck sideframe kits, see the "Traction Chassis" section of this website. Click here to see a typical parts assembly diagram.

The typical Tetsudou ("Railway") Collection consists of ten cars, made from a smaller number of bodyshell castings. A separate storage folio case is also sold, and it comes with an unpainted bodyshell inside. To further complicate everything, each individual "toy" in the collection set of ten comes in a smaller inner box that does not indicate which particular car is inside, and Tomytec makes an eleventh "secret" car which may be substituted into the larger box of ten. There is no assurance exactly what ten cars will be in the larger box, or which car is in any particular inner box. Where information on "secret" cars is known, it is presented below.

Tomytec also offers smaller special collections of one to three cars.

Tomytec numbers the Railway Collection cars sequentially in internal documents, as used in the tables below. Limited Edition "event" cars apparently are not given numbers.

TM-05 and TM-06 are new nominal 17 meter and 18 meter chassis (gray) with power to both trucks and a traction tire on one wheel of each truck. They have good weight in the chassis and can pull 4 to 7 cars comfortably, allowing one unit to move a 8 unit train. These chassis are also very easy to convert to DCC. They are not plug and play, but the way things are designed it is quite easy to convert them. A new TT-02 gray trailer kit is also available and converts two cars.
