Next, the moving crew unloaded the bogie on which the rear of the reel car would ride.
And up she goes!
The carbody was secured to the wheelsets and some of the brake rigging was removed for clearance.
The other end was then lifted up and placed on the truck.
A small crowd had gathered to watch the spectacle.
To avoid striking the truck, the stirrup steps had to be taken off. One of the movers is seen here cutting the bolts that secure the step.
Once the reel car was loaded, its trucks were lifted onto another flatbed and secured.
About this time, the freight crew returned west with some different covered hoppers.
Orange meets orange as the freight train passes the old line car.
Soon the truckers were ready to depart, and the reel car headed down US 12 to begin its journey to South Bend.
With the crane and trucks gone, I was able to get a nice unobstructed roster shot of the 1100. Although the original plan was to move the line car to a temporary building near Sheridan siding in Michigan City, things changed at the last minute and the car was ordered to go to Shops, where it would be stored for a short time. So, we headed over to Shops to watch trains and kill some time before going back to Power to meet the freight crew when they returned to pick up the 1100.
