Friday, 30 June

The day for the train crew started once again with a ride in a pickup from McCloud to the Lorenz Crossing, where the #38 had been left the night before. The first part of the day involved shoving the #821 flat on to Berry, where it could be placed out of the way. Then the crew ran down the Sierra branch, where Sierra Pacific Industries had loaded five of the seven cars left on Tuesday. SPI informed the train crew that with the $1,000 per carload surcharge going into effect within 12 hours they would not be loading the two extra cars, and the #38 departed the mill with five loads and two empties. The train crew picked up the #821 flat and then ran to Cayton, where Dicalite still had four empty covered hoppers on spot. Dicalite too had instructed the railroad to take the cars away, as they would not be loading them either. The #38 paused at Cayton long enough to grap the four empty hoppers before heading back to McCloud.
