The Friends board is a very diverse and talented group of motivated Rhode Island citizens from many walks of life. No task has proven to big or too small for our group to tackle.

It has become clear to us that kids' natural love of trains, and the excitement of the new high-speed trains provide a natural vehicle for generating interest in modern technologies in children. Railroading is among the most technological of industries, and many current developments in communications, computer control, and power systems were originally developed for the railroads.

With Grant assistance, we propose to purchase professionally designed and built interactive displays (similar to those one might find, say, in the Boston Museum of Science) installed in the station that will illustrate the importance of rail transportation, and how technology permits passenger rail transportation to be the most energy efficient and environmentally benign way to move people around. Displays might be titled "How a Train Works," "How Can 2,400 Trains a Day Move Through a Single Station?" "American Passenger Trains&endash;Safest in the World," "Passenger Trains from "The Rocket" to "The Bullet."

We will select these displays to require little or no maintenance expense, permitting our activities to be continue to be relatively independent of funding. The future of neither our organization nor our museum is dependent on Single Grant funding; rather, it will enable us to do a better job and reach a wider audience.

Expenses projected

Pageant of trains display (centerpiece exhibit) $25,000

How does a train work display 6,000

Be an engineer display 5,000
