NORFOLK SOUTHERN |
|
Norfolk Southern enters In Columbus, GA, via former Central of Georgia tracks. Norfolk Southern is the successor to Southern Railway. The Southern gained control of the Central of Georgia in 1963. The Southern already had a rail line into Columbus via Warm Springs, GA. This line was abandoned in favor of the Central of Georgia trackage approximately 1992 and soon removed. Much of the right of way now runs through private back yards and driveways. |

3rd engine of Train 191, Muscogee Jct., Columbus, GA, on way east from Macon, GA on December 5th, 1998. | NS 4138 (GP38AC) awaites it's next assignment in Columbus Yard in December 1998. |
NS Train 191 enters Muscogee Junction in Columbus, arriving from Macon, GA. on December 5, 1998. The track branching off to the right goes to Americus, GA, which is about 8 miles from Where Jimmy Carter lives in Plains, GA. | This is another picture of the same Train 191 at Muscogee Junction on December 5, 1998. As you can see, the power on that day was Union Pacific and Cotton Belt. |
Looking westward from Muscogee Junction toward downtown Columbus. The track on the right is the ex-Central of Georgia (now NS) track. The track in the weeds at the left is the ex- Seaboard Coast Line, ex-CSX track. Georgia Southwestern (GSWR) now uses this track. GSWR serves several industries in Columbus from a small ex-SCL yard just south of the NS yard. GSWR interchanges with NS in Columbus, and actaully leases the NS track from Columbus to Americus, GA. | Here you are looking toward the east along the Georgia Southwestern track. This is the same track that was shown in the weeds in a previous picture. Goergia Southwestern uses this track to service a Mead Paperboard plant in Cusseta, GA. This track used to go to Richland, GA, where it crossed the ex-SCL, ex-CSX track between Savannah, GA and Montgomery, AL. The two lines crossed at a diamond, which was in place as late as 1998. The Savannah-Montgomery line is known to be in service between Webster, GA (next to Plains, GA) and Cordele, GA. In Plains, this line serves a large silo complex which is probably for peanuts (seriously!). |
NS 3173 with a local near the Savannah, GA intermodal terminals. You can see a good amount of intermodal trains in Savannah, on both NS and CSX. | |

This is the where the power "hangs out" in Columbus, GA, between runs. I'm not sure whether or not the fueling rack is still used. |
