During one of our vacations to Italy, we rode the Italian Railway from Rome to Anzzio. During the 1 1/2 hour long trip, I saw a lot of odd things. All lines there are electrified, however, every station we passed through had a small 2 or 3 track yard associated with it for the loading and unloading of cargo. These yards were not electrified, instead employing the use of small diesel locomotives. The station at Rome was enormous, the electrified lines and yard areas make the largest stations in the US look small. Here are the photos...
