Every Year, the CALS (Chesapeake and Allegheny Live Steamers) holds a private run at the Cass Scenic Railway. They basically rent the railway for the weekend, limiting the total number of people on the entire railway to members of live steam clubs (no more then 50 to 75 people total). The lack of people makes the weekend special, the railroad was meant for 75, not 400 to 500 as is usually present at Cass. This year's journey, May 3 through 5, was fantastic. The first day, the 10 hour train ride took us over the mountain and down the valley to the Norfolk and Western MainLine through Spruce. The second day we took the more traditional ride up to Bald Mountain. Unfortunately, due to track work, we were not able to travel all the way up to the summit, falling short by about a mile.
