Canadian National
Rail Yard
January 16, 2000 Page 1
Once again, on our January of 2000 pilgrimage to Toronto, we
stopped of at the Canadian National Rail Yard. What a sight. We
had to sneak in again, as we did last time. The day was freezing,
the low that night was -9°F with a wind chill of 35 below
0! The high, only 5°F, it was 1° when we paid our visit
to the yard, with a heavy, wind blown snow fall. Due to the inclement
weather conditions, the photos needed alot of work in Photoshop
5.5, however, I am very pleased with the results. The following
are most of the 80 or so photos we took.....

The nice inviting sign near the entrance to the yard
The yard tower, located at the base of the hump and
the throat of the main staging yard
A colorful Sclair covered hopper heading for the hump
That Sclair hopper atop the hump
After being uncoupled, the Sclair hopper rolls down
the hump under it's own power, pulled by gravity down the grade.
It will roll into the yard and correct siding.
An odd sign, Caution, Radio Controlled Locomotives!
The down grade of the hump, notice the tower in the
distance
This is a retarder track, rubbed "buffers"
put pressure on the wheels of the cars as they roll down the hump.
This slows them down, keeping their speed under control.
