Under full steam BigBoy spued an astounding amount of smoke. To deflect the smoke away from the cab, the engine was equipped with some of the most state of the art smoke deflecting systems available. First of all, he had twin stacks, the sheer volume of exhaust he produced warranted the use of 2 smoke stacks. There was a sheet metal fence surrounding the stacks. The most ingenious thing was the 2 side folding smoke deflector hoods. These folded up from one side or the other (controlled from the cab, depending on the wind direction) to deflect the smoke away from the engine.
