Phases:

Phase Ia: the VO-1000 body used only on Reading 34 and 35 and SAL 1417 (6/46).
Phase Ib: the remainder of 8-cylinder production with the flat front grill (7/46-1/48).

Phase IIa: the original 6-cylinder version with distinct groups of upper louver sets (1-3/48). IIa1 has two thin louver sets behind the sand fillers. IIa2 has a 3-louver set mounted low ahead of the sand fillers and another 3-louver set behind the right sand filler.
Phase IIb: evenly-spaced louver sets (3/48-1/50). IIb1 has two tall louver sets behind the sand filler, IIb2 has a 3-louver set mounted low ahead of the sand fillers and another 3-louver set behind the right sand filler. IIb3 has two 3-louver sets ahead of the sand filler. IIb4 has a 7-louver set ahead of the sand filler. IIb5 eliminates the 7-louver sets.
Phase IIc: trio of louver sets below the stack, no louvers ahead of the sand fillers. (7/49-2/50).

Phase IIIa: straight side sill, redesigned cab windows, pair of tall louver sets on two bulged doors below the stack, hinged sand door (2/50-5/50).
Phase IIIb: two louvered doors with the tall bevel between, flush sand door (7/50-1/51).
