Blackrock, village on the Lee, parish of
St. Finbar (q.v.), SE county Cork, Ireland, 3 miles east of Cork.
The church, in the Perpendicular style, is a chapel-of-ease to the
cathedral of St. Finbar ; there is also a Roman Catholic chapel, an
Ursuline convent (which, with its chapel, stands in extensive
grounds), two lunatic asylums, and several schools. The surrounding
landscape is of great beauty. The castle, founded 1604, was rebuilt
1830, its lofty tower being utilised as a lighthouse. Dundanion
Castle and King Mahon Castle are in ruins. Amethysts have been
found in the neighbourhood. Beaumont, Castle Mahon, and
Lakelands are seats in finely-wooded parks.
