Blarney, village on the Blarney and the
Comane, parish of Garrycloyne (q.v.), Mid county Cork, Ireland, 4
miles NW of Cork. The river is here spanned by a bridge and the
surrounding scenery is lovely in the extreme. The parish church is
a plain building, besides which there are schools. Two annual fairs
are held. Linen and cotton manufactures, one important industries,
are now extinct, but a large woollen mill gives employment to many
of the inhabitants. The old castle, standing on a limestone rock,
was built on the site of an older stronghold by Cormac McCarthy in
1446. It contains the celebrated "Blarney Stone," which is said to
confer marvellous powers of persuasion and cajolery on anyone who
kisses it. There are some remarkable caves in the neighbourhood.
Blarney Castle is a modern seat.
Population: 808.
