The model illustrated below is a scatchbuilt, logging company pile driver. It was fabricated
mostly from dimensional basswood by our member John B. for an up-coming NMRA Northeastern
Region model contest. Consisting of some 314 individual pieces, this HO model is based on a
prototype owned by the Benson Logging Company. A construction article regarding this
non-revenue car appearred in the September 1976 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman. The model
is complete down to minute tools, including a woodsman's axe in the log pile at the rear of
the machine

This shot, by the club's master photographer John Bortle, won a First Place in the Color Print - Model category at the 1997 NMRA National Convention, as well as placing 4th in Model Railroader magazines's 2000 Photo Contest. It depicts two youngsters watching the passage of a Metro North commuter train just south of Poughkeepsie, NY. The train is being pulled by an EMD F-10 locomotive, an HO model built by the photographer especially for this shot.

Against a colorful late afternoon autumnal backdrop, an NYO&W class-P camelback consolidation pulls a long freight drag across a dizzying span in western New York. This photo, by John Bortle, was featured as a cover-shot a few years ago on the NMRA Bulletin, that organization's monthly magazine.

At Cold Spring, NY, in the heart of the Hudson Highlands, a group of 1950's railfans have gathered to photo-document the passage of one of the New York Central's great name trains - the south-bound Twentieth Century Limited. Although the models in the foreground are HO scale, the shot was taken at the actual location cited and the background is real (that's the Highland's famous Storm King Mountain in the background). This picture appears in the 2000 Walthers Catalog and a B&W version garnered John Bortle a Second Place award at the 1997 NMRA National Convention.
