Lloyd Hudspeth built a planing mill in Seneca in 1947. The planing mill provided the only steady commercial
traffic handled by the Oregon & Northwestern Railroad outside of livestock traffic. Hudspeth
operated the mill until 1952, when a restructuring of the family buisness placed the plant under the
title of Seneca Mills, Inc. The plant was sold to Ellingson Lumber Company, who in turn sold the plant
to the Edward Hines Lumber Company in 1966. Edward Hines operated the mill until around 1984, when
the plant was closed and replaced with a new dry kiln facility built in John Day.
