Tank Cars

Next to log cars, tank cars are one of the most common and useful car types on logging railroads. Tank cars have many uses across eras, including mobile fuel and water supplies for locomotives and logging equipment plus fire prevention and suppression. Weyerhaeuser had a large number of tank cars used in the Klamath operations, and then acquired two more equipped as fire cars along with the OC&E when it bought the railroad.

Weyerhaeuser fire service tank car #041 in Klamath Falls on 19 June 1982. Both the OC&E and Weyerhaeuser Woods trains carried fire cars during the dry season until the middle 1980s when the operations got permission from the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon state fire officials to replace them with speeders carrying water following closely behind the trains. One of the more intriguing tank cars on the Klamath operations is this former wine service tank car semi-permanently stationed at the Sycan shops to store various lubricating oils and other fluids used in servicing locomotives and equipment. The "TPCX" reporting marks in this case note The Purdy Company, an equipment dealer from or through which Weyerhaeuser almost certainly purchased the car. This car survives at Train Mountain near Chiloquin. John Henderson photo, Jeff Moore collection.
