![]() On his first visit Charles arranged to ride a log train from Sycan to 500 transfer and back. Frost is still seen on the ties as the #105, #102, and #103 start putting their train together in the Sycan yard. ![]() A second shot of the train being assembled at Sycan. ![]() The train pulling out the north end of the Sycan yard. ![]() Charles rode on the idler flat behing the power and caboose for much of the northbound journey. ![]() Entering Sycan Marsh. Looking back through a long line of empty log cars as the train crosses the marsh. The train crew found loading operations still under way at 500 Transfer, so Charles had an opportunity to take a photograph of the Warner Logstacker transfering entire loads from the off-road trucks bringing logs into the Transfer onto railcars. The three Baldwins waiting for loading to be finished. Loading is almost complete, so the Baldwins have coupled onto the long line of log loads. Charles rode the #103 at the head of the train for the ride back to Sycan. Another shot looking back at the train from the head end. The Baldwins moving through the yard after setting the loads out for the OC&E to pick up. |

The second visit Charles made to the operation happened sometime between 1983, when Weyerheaeser replaced the Baldwins, and 1986, when Weyerhaeuser closed the Bly mill. This visit started with the #7604, #7603, and Weyerheauser #312 leading an eastbound freight crossing Highway 140 between Olene and Swan Lake. On the head end are a number of log loads being hauled to the Bly mill.
Approaching the Highway 140 underpass near Swan Lake. Entering the loops below the West Switchback. Final approach to the West Switchback.
OC&E cabooses #2007 and #2008 bringing up the rear of the train.
Another shot of the two OC&E cabooses crossing a highway along the line. |
