The city of Hamilton is a two-tiered city. A little more than 3 km from the shores of Lake Ontario is the Niagara Escarpment, a 90-metre high limestone cliff. Scaling this cliff was vital if Hamilton was to continue to expand as a city, and so in order to get people and wagons from the top to the bottom, 3 inclined railways were chartered. Two of these were actually built in the 1890s; the third at Ottawa St was not.
