General Notes:
1. Three GG20B units built in June-July 2005 by Motive Power Inc. (Wabtec) in Boise, ID. First unit (6000) completed 6-13-2005 and shipped to Fort Lewis, WA (near Tacoma). From RailPower website. (http://www.railpower.com/usarmy.html)
2. Initial deployment from Extra 2200 South and other sources: USAX 6000 to Fort Lewis, WA; USAX 6001 to the Sierra Army Depot in Hurlong, CA; USAX 6002 to the USMC Logistics Center in Yermo, CA. From Extra 2000 South #128, page 21. 6001 later moved to Fort Sill, OK.
|
Notes:
A. Frame number checked by webmaster during visit in early 2006.
B. Actual unit number confirmed by frame number verification by Bob Lehmuth Dec. 2006 with much thanks. This confirmed that the 6002 was built using TM 855 as a core, despite earlier reports that that unit had been used as the core for 6001.
C. All three units have now (Autumn 2009) been moved to Hill Air Force Base near Ogden, UT for work. An Army source expected them to be converted to gensets, but nothing firm has been released by the Army yet. Units previously had been moved to Hill for warranty replacement for the batteries in early 2006. Update: According to sources at the DGRC, these units will be parted out and scrapped unless another solution is found.

A. Original unit number WC 2057 from Extra 2200 South #129, page 21. Extra information from the Unofficial EMD Homepage (http://www.trainweb.org/emdloco/) Original build date unconfirmed, but locomotives on both sides of this unit in the order were built in March, 1964. General Notes:
1. According to a recent press release from NRE, the US Army has ordered a pair of 3GS21Bs for use at Fort Hood, TX. (The press release is not archived online.) they didn't say anything about NRE gensets. Nevertheless, news that they were ordering two 3GS21B's and one 3GS21C was reported in the Trains Magazine special "Locomotive 2007" edition.
2. 6500-6501, Build location and builder's plate data confirmed by Mark Mautner.
3. Later unit orders (6502-6503 and 6504-6506) built to same spec as 6500-6501 despite new variant of hood design, etc. being in regular production.
4. 6502-6503, plate check performed by JMoore. 6504, plate info relayed via KenZ 2nd hand. 6506, plate check performed by Colorado Zephyr. Info in all three cases taken from emissions decal on units because they did not have builder's plates installed.
5. 6506 Plate Info provided by Sean Graham-White.
|
Notes:
A. Because the Army wanted their new units to be delivered quickly, two locomotives from the BNSF order were diverted to fill this order. As such, the 6500 and 6501 are built to BNSF specs. From various discussions and on-site confirmation.
B. Deployment information from on-site verification by webmaster.
C. Deployment information from a press release by NRE and from on-site reports by COZephyr, Nathan Zachmann, and others.
