General Notes:
1. This order for two RP20CD gensets (894-895) is in addition to the first order for four delivered earlier in 2008. Like the first four, these units are funded by a Carl Moyer grant and will go into service on the Roseville, CA hump (?). The order was announced in a press release by Railpower on Sept. 22, 2008..
2. UP's first order for four RP20CD locomoitves was announced by Railpower in a Sept. 12, 2007 press release. The units will go into service in Roseville according to other sources, and will be classed as RP20SD by UP.
|
Notes:
A. Build locations provided by Bruce Mercer. UPY 894 was delivered in late March 2009. Initial deployment to Fort Worth also provided by Mr. Mercer. According to Scott Thomas, the 894 moved to Roseville in May 2009, arriving from Fort Worth on May 11.
B. Build locations provided by Bruce Mercer. Unit spotted near complete at AMP in mid-April 2009. As of mid-May 2009, unit was still not on UP rails.
C. After being held at AMP during Railpower's purchase by RJ Corman group, UPY 895 was finally delivered in June 2009. Like the 894, the 895 did break-in testing at Centenial Yard in Fort Worth, TX before being put into regular service in Roseville, CA.
D. In mid-May 2008, UPY 896 was part of an officer's special train to Sacramento. The unit was displayed at the California State Railroad Museum for several days before traveling back to Roseville. The event was covered in a UP press release: http://www.uprr.com/newsinfo/releases/environment/2008/0522_calif_genset.shtml, and a Railpower press release.
E. UPY 897 and 898 were photographed together on CP train 233-24 in Smiths Falls, ON in late April 2008 en route to the US. After a break-in period, the 897, 898 and 899 were all photographed together in transit to California on the I-G2OA-6 in Cheyenne, WY in the early morning hours of June 8, 2008.
F. In April 2009, UPY 899 managed to make a glamorous escape from Roseville Yard while serving as a the diesel helper for UP 844 on several legs of the Western Heritage Tour. In that capacity, the 899 joined the 1944-built steamer for a jaunt from Roseville to Oakland, then down to Stockton.

Notes:
A. Core unit numbers for these two units was provided by Railpower in mid-Oct. 2008. At that time it was projected that the cores would be used in that order, but it was still early enough in the manufacturing process that they might have been switched.
B. Core unit numbers for the first four units was provided by Railpower in mid-Jan. 2008. According to Railpower, the group includes former UP SD40-2's UP 3728 (UPY 896), UP 7891 (UPY 897), UP 7916 (UPY 898) and UP 3635 (UPY 899).
C. According to initial reports, the core unit for UPY 896 is UP 3728, built Feb. 1980 and carrying the same number until retirement. Builder's number 796297-70. That doesn't appear to be correct, though. Shop reports have the unit as RPRX 4298, former UPB 4298. That unit, stripped of its engine and components, shipped to CAD in July 2007. Later reports, frame comparisons, and builder's plate data support the 4298.
D. Previous unit data for all units from Don Strack's UP rosters. (http://www.utahrails.net/all-time/modern-index.php).

General Notes:
1. UPY 2004 was built at Alstom Calgary in 2004 and sold to the UP in 2005. The core unit was former SOO Line GP9 SOO 4001. UP’s class for this unit is GG20GP as it uses an EMD GP unit as a core. From Don Strack’s UP Roster page (http://utahrails.net/all-time/upy-03.php#gg20gp-upy2000).
|
Notes:
A. Photographed in April, 2006 by the webmaster in Fresno, CA. When in service with UP, the 2004 was a regular in Fresno.
B. Serial number from a photograph of the builder's plate in the Trains Magazine special issue "Locomotive", pg. 38. The same photo also showed the original build date of the donor unit as Dec., 1958, conflicting with the other sources of data for the original date.
C. Sent to CAD for upgrades in August 2007, then moved to TMS in Altoona, PA in July 2008 where it was stripped and prepared for conversion into an RP20BD genset. The unit languished sans everything above the frame line except the cab until early 2010, when it was sent to the shop to be converted for RJ Corman Railroad after the initial core frame supplied by RJC was determined to be unuseable.

Notes:
A. SOO 4001 was built in 2-1958 as MILW 2370, an EMD GP9, builder #23549, frame# 5545-3. As MILW 948, the unit was rebuilt as part of the Milwaukee Road's GP20 rebuild program. The unit was later converted to use as a fuel tender by the SOO line, looking basically like a chopped down Geep with no cab. It was retired by CP and stored in Calgary before the hulk was sold to RailPower. SOO history from the Railroad Picture Archives Soo Photographic Roster (http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=10419) with additional comments by Trainorders.com user greendot.

General Notes:
1. Prototype unit was built by NRE in Mt. Vernon, IL. Initially called a Truck Engine Switcher, later dubbed a genset switcher. From UP press relase dated Sept. 30, 2004. (http://www.uprr.com/newsinfo/railroad/2004/0930_pioneer.shtml).
|
Notes:
A. UPY 2005 was the first so-called “Genset” locomotive of any kind to be built. It was built at NRE’s Mt. Vernon, IL shops, and is unique in that it has a center cab arrangement. The 2GS14B units have two 700-hp Cummins engines for a total horsepower rating of 1,400 hp. Assigned to Dolores, CA. From UP press release and other sources.
B. Builder's plate information provided by Bob Lehmuth. Model on the builder's plate is simply GS14B, but it is listed elsewhere as a 2GS14B, and that model number is kept on this site.
