General Notes:
1. One-of-a-kind. This was the prototype Green Goat, assembled at New Westminster, BC shops of Southern Railway of BC. Features significant differences from production models, most notably a shorter long hood and larger rear windows.
2. Prototype Unit in class GGS2000D, not a production GG20B. From stenciling on the side of the unit. Later referenced as a GG10B in Railpower internal documentation.
|
Notes:
A. Originally built with 90HP Caterpillar genset, but was updated to a 130HP diesel because of supply requirements. Unsure if updated to 300HP genset like production units. From Model Railroader, Jan. 2006, pg. 71.
B. Nicknamed “Emerald” after one of the founder’s daughters. From Model Railroader, Jan. 2006, pg. 71.
C. After construction, the unit was extensively tested all over the US and Canada. Following the construction of the GG20B demonstrators RPRX 2401-2405, the 2001 was stored at SRY’s Trapp Yard in New Westminster, BC, where it remains as of 11/09. Sightings by JM and others.

General Notes:
1. RPRX 1701, 1705, 2406 and RSSX 414 were all built as 3rd generation units with larger battery vents on top of the hood, and a few other differences from earlier GG's.
2. RPRX 2406, 1701 and 1705 were built for Canadian Pacific as CP 1700, 1701 and 1705 respectively. Units were returned to Railpower after the CP contract was terminated in late 2006. From Railpower prese release. At that time, By that time, CP 1700 had already been leased to Amtrak and was on its way to Los Angeles. CP 1701 was renumbered RPRX 1701. After moving to Erie, PA, it was used in testing and then placed in storage. CP 1705 was complete but was never delivered. Unit briefly appeared in CP paint, but was quickly repainted in RP green and renumbered RPRX 1705.
3. Five GG20B demonstrator units built in 2004 and 2005 and used all over the US and Canada before being put into lease service with UP (2401-2404) and BNSF (2405).
|
Notes:
A. RSSX 3rd generation GG20B 414 was upgraded to 4th gen standards. It was traded back to Railpower in exchange for demonstrator RPRX 2402 as part of a legal settlement between the two entities detailed in Railpower's 2008 3rd Quarter MD&A. Since that time, the unit has been stored at Texas Eastman in Longview, TX and has not traveled to Railpower (as of Feb. 2010).
B. Following the purchase of Railpower by RJ Corman, RPRX 1701 was repainted by RJC forces and assigned as the switcher for Novellis, an aluminum rolling facility in Berea, KY. From source information.
C. CP 1704 and 1705 built with 500kW genset. Unit built but never delivered to CP. Placed into storage after termination of the CP contract. From observations by Doug Mackenzie and others.
D. CP 1705 became RPRX 1705, and was reported in 2007 to be on Lease/Demo to NovaChem in Joffre, AB. Later re-sold to Viriginia International Terninals as their NITX 1705 for service in Norfolk, VA. According to Railpower, the 1705 will be leased then sold to the Virginia International Terminal as part of their three-unit order for one GG20B and two RP20BD's, which was announced on July 31, 2008. Unit was delivered to Newport, VA on the weekend of Oct. 18-19, 2008.
E. 2401 moved to Texas in Aug., 2006. The unit is presumably serving as fill-in power for some of the UP units that have been incapacitated. Sent to CAD for upgrades in August 2007, then moved to TMS in Altoona, PA in August 2008. According to Railpower, this unit will be rebuilt by TMS into an RP20BD genset.
F. 2401 rebuilt as M&ET 2001, an RP20BD genset for Modesto & Empire Traction, at TMS in 2008.
G. RPRX 2402 reported at Alstom Calgary for modifications 12-2005. From Extra 2200 South #128, page 21.
H. As reported in Railpower's 3rd Quarter MD&A, Railpower and Railserve are swapping RSSX 414 for RPRX 2402. Unit sent to RSS Longview in early 2009, where it was stripped of its hybrid gear and rebuilt as a LEAF single engine switcher, RSSX 2401. It is now assigned to Texas Eastman in Longview, TX.
I. RPRX 2403-2404 reported in demonstration service with Norfolk Southern 12-2005. From Extra 2200 South #128, page 21. RPRX 2403 and 2404 working in Mira Loma, CA as of June, 2006. From UP Equipment Traces. ent to CAD for upgrades in August 2007, then moved to TMS in Altoona, PA in August 2008. According to Railpower, this unit will be rebuilt by TMS into an RP20BD genset.
J. 2403 rebuilt as NITX 1707, an RP20BD genset, by TMS. Held at TMS under lien until ownership transferred to NS as part of a three-way settlement of the lien in early 2009. Reported in early 2010 that it would be completed and sold to Virginia International Terminal in Norfolk, VA.
K. 2404 rebuilt as M&ET 2000, an RP20BD genset for Modesto & Empire Traction, at TMS in 2008.
L. RPRX 2405 reported in 5-year lease (?) to BNSF for use in the Los Angeles area. From BNSF press release 5-23-2005. Sent to CAD for upgrades in August 2007, then moved to TMS in Altoona, PA in August 2008. According to Railpower, this unit will be rebuilt by TMS into an RP20BD genset.
M. 2405 rebuilt as NITX 1706, an RP20BD genset, by TMS. Held at TMS under lien until ownership transferred to NS as part of a three-way settlement of the lien in early 2009. Reported in early 2010 that it would be completed and sold to Virginia International Terminal in Norfolk, VA.
N. Following the purchase of Railpower by RJ Corman, RPRX 2406 was repainted by RJC forces into RJC's red paint scheme and assigned as a switcher on RJC in Guthrie, KY. From source information.

General Notes:
1. RP20BD Prototype under construction at Super Steel Schenectady in 2006. From Extra 2200 South, #128, Pg. 21. Rolled out May 10, 2006 at Schenectady, NY. From Trains Magazine newsline, May 10, 2006. Prototype has dynamic brakes, and differs from production models in that it has an earlier version of the cab design.
2. RPRX 5402-5406 built to basically the same specifications as UP’s order of RP20BDs, including the GE frames. They were initially used in lease service to BNSF in Stockton, CA, with all but 5402 later leased to Union Pacific in West Coloton. They are presently being leased to Modesto & Empire Traction, and working alongside M&ET’s pair of RP20BD’s.
3. RPRX 5407 has several distinctive spotting features when compared to the previous generation of RP20BD's. The most notable is a taller long hood, more akin to those introduced on the RP20CD locomotives. The taller hood also means a much smaller rear window at the top of the cab. This is the design that the production units would carry from that point forward. The 5407 is also significant in that it was the first 3 engine genset built by any manufacturer on a GP9 platform.
|
Notes:
A. When RJ Corman completed the purchase of Railpower, RP20BD demonstrator RPRX 5407 was renumbered RPRX 2009 in honor of the year of the purchase. All data for the 5407 applies to the 2009 as well, and is not repeated here.
B. From various sources, the 5400 has demonstrated on CSX and other eastern railroads in 2007. It was reported in late Nov. 2007 in Florida. Demonstrated in Texas in late 2007 and early 2008, first on the Orange Port Terminal Railroad, Orange, TX (Dec. 2007), then KCS, Beaumont, TX (Jan. 2008). 2008 demo stops include: Modesto & Empire Traction, Modesto, CA (Feb. 2008); Richmond Pacific, Richmond, CA (March 2008); Central California Traction, Stockton, CA (March-April 2008); San Joaquin Valley RR, Fresno, CA (April 2008); Tacoma Rail, Tacoma, WA (July 2008); Portland & Western, Albany, OR (Aug. 2008); Southern Ry. of BC, New Westminster, BC (Aug.-Sept. 2008); Terminal Railway Association, St. Louis, MO (Oct. 2008); Indiana Harbor Belt, Hammond, IN (Nov. 2008); Belt Railway of Chicago (Dec. 2008-Jan. 2009); Finger Lakes Railway, (early 2009); RJ Corman, Lexington, KY (July 2009-present)
C. In summer 2007, the 5402 was involved in a mysterious accident where it throttled up and moved into a group of standing locomotives. The engine sustained heavy damage. In Nov. 2007, it was loaded on flat car BNSF 585226 with its trucks on OTTX 94084. The two flats were then sent to Relco in Albia, IA for repairs. From various photo evidence and discussion. UPDATE: As of Thanksgiving 2007, the 585226 is b/o in Newton, KS. Was later delivered to Relco, and the 5402 was completed in mid-2009, after RJC's purchase of Railpower. The unit was delivered to RJC in Lexington, tested, and sent west to join the rest of the lease fleet on the Modesto & Empire Traction.
D. 5403's serial number and original manufacture date of Oct. 2006 provided by Eric Aucoin from visual inspection. Confirmed by the webmaster in Denver, CO while the units were en-route to California.
E. Serial number and original manufacture date of Oct. 2006 provided by Eric Aucoin from visual inspection.
F. In Nov. 2008, the 5405 demonstrated for Rail America shortline San Diego & Imperial Valley in San Diego, CA. After two weeks, the unit was returned to UP.
G. Serial number and builder’s plate information recorded by the webmaster in Denver, CO in 2006.
H. After release, 5407 spent some time on Montreal, Maine and Atlantic, St. Jean, Quebec. Demonstrations in 2008 include: MM&A, St. Jean, Quebec (May-July 2008); Montreal Wharves (Port of Montreal RR?), Montreal, Quebec (Aug. 2008). Canadian Pacific, Calgary, AB (Aug.-Nov. 2008); Belt Railway of Chicago, Chicago, IL (Nov. 2008); RJ Corman Railroad, Bardstown, KY (Dec. 2008-March 2009).
I. Build date and serial number from a photo of the builder's plate taken by Bo Gray while the 5407 was testing on RJ Corman. Unfortunately, this is the same set of data that is applied to UPY 896-899.

Notes:
A. According to Railpower, ex-CN 9637 was used for RP20BD prototype RPRX 5400, and the donor for RPRX 5401 was NENE 9702. Provided by Railpower, August, 2006. In Dec. 2008, Ken Lanovich frame checked RPRX 5400 and found it to be former NENE 9702. That means that the 5401 was probably the ex-CN 9637. Both units were built at CAD Rail in Lachine around the same time.
B. 5400’s donor unit history (NENE 9702) from RRPicture Archives roster page (http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=102305).

H. RPRX 5407 was converted from BNSF yard slug 3966. That unit was originally an EMD GP9B, built Feb. 1954, b/n 19234, f/n 5321-B29, as UP 158B. After retirement sold to Naporano in 1978, then ATSF in May 1979. Converted to yard slug ATSF 125, later ATSF 1125, then BNSF 36 and 3966. In storage since 2004. From Don Strack’s all-time UP roster (http://utahrails.net/all-time/all-time-02.php#gp9b-130b). It was stripped by BNSF in Topeka for conversion to fuel cell, but apparently was shelved in favor of the BNSF 1205.
