General Notes:
1. Units are 1GS7B type units with new fabrication cabs at the R-end and a single Cummins QSK19 genset. Apparently built on recycled EMD SW-type frames, but at least one 1GS7B built - NREX 700 - has a new serial number. In the past, when NRE has used a recycled frame, the serial number assigned has been the frame number of the core unit used (as in the NS 3GS21C), or a similar trade-in (as in the case of the FWWR 2GS14B's). So there is a chance that any or all of these units could be constructed on new frames.
|
Notes:
A. Purchase of a 1GS7B for Alliance Grain in Vancouver, BC announced in a press release by NRE on Aug. 12, 2009. http://www.nationalrailway.com/News_081209.pdf.
B. Viterra, Inc. operates the Pacific Elevators facility in Vancouver, BC. The purchase of a genset unit funded through Canada's ECOFreight program was announced in a press release (http://www.nationalrailway.com/N-ViroReleasefinal.pdf) on May 7, 2008. Viterra tested 2GS14B demonstrator NREX 2007 late the previous year, and it was widely expected that they would purchase a multi-engine unit.
C. VITX 2010 was first reported in transit in Indiana in late October 2008. It moved to Vancouver via CP in mid to late November 2008..

General Notes:
1. For various reasons, the core units used in these builds (except SPAX 70) are not known.
2. Fort Worth and Western had initially ordered two GG20B hybrids from Railpower with TERP funding, but opted instead for NRE two engine genset units. From Railpower press release and subsequent discussions
|
Notes:
A. As built, the 2013 was numbered 1400, and the 2014 was numbered 1401. They were renumbered to their current numbers shortly after their arrival on the FWWR.
B. FWWR units 1500 and 103 (both EMD GP7's) were sent to NRE for this conversion. Though FWWR 1400 and 1401 were built on recycled frames, it appears that neither the 1500 nor the 103 were actually used. The 1500 was spotted at Mt. Vernon well after the new units left, and the 103 appears to have become NREX 103, a lease unit at Marathon Oil in Robinson, IL. From photo evidence on http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=952217 and discussions by Bruce Mercer on the LocoNotes Yahoo group.
C. FWWR Serial numbers and build date from plate check by Ken Fitzgerald. Interestingly, even though we’ve already established that neither core unit was used, NRE has stamped the corresponding frame numbers in the normal location on the frame. For this reason, it’s very likely that we’ll never know the true identity of the core frames involved.
D. Odfjell 1400 (transported as NREX 1400 because Odfjell doesn’t have its own reporting marks) is a 2GS14B with a specially modified high visibility short hood. It is used at the bulk commodities terminal near Houston, TX.
E. Odfjell 1400 carries the name “Bow Loco” on top of its cab, in keeping (perhaps whimsically?) with the Norwegian company’s pattern of naming all of its vessels “Bow” Something.
F. Mention of a genset locomotive for SEPTA is made in section 1 of the NRE N-ViroMotive Features and Benefits flyer published 8-1-08 and available on the NRE website.

General Notes:
1. Massachusetts bay Transportation Authority provides bus, subway, rail and ferry service in the greater Boston, MA area. The purchased gensets are used in work train service, and supplanted leased 3GS21B NREX 2008, which was returned shortly after they were delivered.
2. Neptune Bulk Terminals is North America's largest multi-product bulk terminal and is located on the north shore of Burrard Inlet in North Vancouver, BC. It handles metallurgical and thermal coal, potash, grains, specialcrops, animal feed, bulk fertilizers, and canola oil. From Port Metro Vancouver’s website: http://www.portmetrovancouver.com/users/landoperations/terminalsandfacilities.aspx.
3. NOVA Chemicals' Joffre manufacturing facility lies just east of Red Deer, Alberta, and is the largest ethylene and polyethylene complex in the world. From NOVAChem’s website: http://www.novachemicals.com/locations/locations_joffre.cfm.

Notes:
A. From a citation on the NETransit roster page, for MBTA http://members.aol.com/rtspcc/roster/MBTAroster.htm that said that the board put out a bid for two genset switchers, due to close on Jan. 30, 2008, and a further note that the MBTA board approved the purchase of two units from NRE at a contract rate of $3.3Million. I found the minutes for that board meeting online. Reference Item 9 in the following link: http://groups.google.com/group/ne.transportation/browse_thread/thread/13355ef93\7e04e82.
B. MBTA 3249 first spotted at NRE Paducah in early January 2008. MBTA 3248 first spotted at NRE Paducah in mid-January 2008. Both units departed in early March and were sent to Mass. on CSX via Cleveland. According to reports, MBTA 3249 was displayed at the New England Rail Symposium in Worcester, MA prior to delivery.
C. MBTA 3248 builder's plate info from a plate check provided by Dave Santos. Build date is from the Builder's Plate itself. The emissions decal shows a conflicting build date of 12/08.
D. MBTA 3249 builder's plate and other information provided by Mark R. Double checked by Dave Santos. On this unit, the build date on the builder's plate is Jan. 09, while the build date on the emissions sticker is Dec. 08. I've used the builder's plate info for this page, but want to record that there is a conflict between the two.
E. Neptune 808 and 808A the first genset mother-slug pair built. They were constructed by NRE Mt. Vernon in late December 2008. Slug unit on new frame is Neptune 808A, ran in UMLER as NREX 8081.
F. Neptune 3GS21B 808 and slug 808A (moving as NREX 8081) were spotted on the Evansville & Western Railroad in Mount Vernon, IL on Dec. 28. The pair tested on the E&W until Jan. 6, 2009, and were returned to NRE.
G. Neptune 808 and 808A serial number and other builder's plate data from a check by Joe Ferguson.
H. Not much has been revealed about this reclusive three-motored genset other than a photo and quick mention of the purchase of the unit by NovaChem in the Dec. 2008 issue of their SiteLine quarterly newsletter.
