General Notes:
1. Can be called a Phase III body style, with larger vents over the batteries. There are some minor component differences as well.
2. Units were the first of a 35-unit order by Canadian Pacific. CP 1700-1706 were to be constructed in 2005 for testing. From CP Railway press release 3-14-2005. Contract terminated in late 2006. From Railpower press release. Units returned to Railpower and resold.
|
Notes:
A. Originally built as CP 1700 for Canadian Pacific, leased (sold?) to Amtrak as AMTK 599 at the termination of the CP contract. After Amtrak lease expired, the unit was returned to Railpower, becoming RPRX 2406.
B. CP 1701 to be retained by Railpower as lease/demo unit RPRX 1701. From Canadian Railway Observations May 2007 edition.
C. CP 1702 sold by Railpower to US Army as USAX 6004. From Canadian Railway Observations May 2007 edition. From other information, unit is to be deployed at Fort Bliss, TX (near El Paso.)
D. CP 1703 was sold to BP Amoco and moved to their Cherry Point (Blaine, WA) refinery. From online discussions and direct contact with BP. Serial number provided by BP.
E. CP 1704 and 1705 built with 500kW genset. Unit built but never delivered to CP. Placed into storage after termination of the CP contract. From observations by Doug Mackenzie and others.
F. CP 1704 was moved to CAD in Lachine and stripped in early 2007, emerging as BNSF 1205 in primer, with new trucks and no fuel tank. The unit moved south in late April 2007 for conversion to fuellcell-hybrid. See the website of the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute for more details. From photo evidence and discussions.
G. CP 1705 became RPRX 1705, and was reported in 2007 to be on Lease/Demo to NovaChem in Joffre, AB. Later re-sold to Viriginia International Terninals as their NITX 1705 for service in Norfolk, VA.
H. CP 1706 and 1707 were on the floor at Alstom Calgary and under construction when the CP order was cancelled. Both units were disassembled and reportedly shipped to CAD for completion. What happened to them after that was never revealed.

Notes:
A. CP 1700-1704 donor unit histories from the CP Locomotive Roster and Photo Archives. (http://www.trainweb.org/galt-stn/cproster/main.htm). Build dates from Bytown Rail Society "Branchline" Magazine.
B. CP 1705 reported to be built from StL&A 68. From Extra 2200 South #129, page 11. CP 1705 donor unit information from the unofficial EMD homepage (http://www.trainweb.org/emdloco/). Conflicting information from the Canadian Trackside Guide, 2004 ed., pg. 1-151 and other sources has St. Lawrence & Atlantic 68 as being ex-GT/CV 4445. But the EMDLoco site has that unit as being StLA 1766, which was wrecked and scrapped in 1995.
C. CP 1706’s donor unit information from Wilco von Schonhoven’s Mountain Rails website with additional information from the Canadian Trackside Guide 2006 edition.
D. Donor for the unit that was to becme CP 1706 is not known, but it is likely to be one of the St.L&A units.
