General Notes:
1. Though not technically a Tier 2-compliant switcher, the LNG-fueled MK1200G is included in this site because of its forward thinking design that was ultra low emissions before the EPA’s tier system had even been conceived. Two each were built in 1994 for testing by Santa Fe and Union Pacific, and all four still remain in service for BNSF in Los Angeles. There is a very detailed summary of the testing of these units and description of them at this link: http://www.users.qwest.net/~kryopak/mk1200G.htm.
2. All four MK1200G units are currently leased to the Los Angeles Junction Railway of Vernon, CA.
|
Notes:
A. BNSF 1200 and 1201 were originally built for the Santa Fe as ATSF 1200 and 1201 respectively. They were built to run long-hood forward, but were sent back to MPI to be modified for short hood-forward operation in 1998. The author caught them in Pasco, WA on their way back to MPI.
B. BNSF 1202 and 1203 were originally built for lease to Union Pacific as UP 1298 and 1299 respectively. The units were leased to UP for use in Commerce, CA until 1998. After that time, they were returned to MPI and then sold to BNSF. Unlike the ex-ATSF units, the 1202 and 1203 are configured to run long-hood forward.
C. BNSF 1203 reported to be on lease to Pacific Harbor Line for evaluation in 2009.

|
General Notes:
1. Originally built as CP 1704. CP 1704 was among the first of a 35-unit order by Canadian Pacific. CP 1700-1706 were to be constructed in 2005 for testing. From CP Railway press release 3-14-2005. Contract terminated in late 2006. From Railpower press release. At that time, CP 1704 was complete and painted, but was never delivered.
|
Notes:
A. CP 1704 was moved to CAD in Lachine and stripped in early 2007, emerging as BNSF 1205 in primer, with new trucks and no fuel tank. The unit moved south in late April 2007 for conversion to fuellcell-hybrid. See the website of the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute for more details. From photo evidence and discussions.
B. Unit moved to Mid America Car in Kansas City for paint, then unveiled to the public in Topeka, KS in July 2009. Moved to Pueblo, CO. According to newspaper articles when the unit was unveiled, the 1205 would be testing at TTCI until early September or so, then would move to Los Angeles for further testing in service.
C. Class designation HH20B from labels on the locomotive. Thanks to Nathan Zachman for the photos that revealed that information.

General Notes:
1. Units 1210 and 1211 are remote control platforms, and have no cabs. They also differ from conventional GG locomotives in having a very GP9-looking nose. The 1210 and 1211 have a cab-like enclosure housing the electrical cabinet, and supporting the remote antenna and strobe lights, with a profile very similar to the ATSF Topeka cab, but not nearly as long, and without windows. There is even a small access door on the F side of the enclosure, and a forward-facing set of number boards.
2. Units 1212 and 1213 are also remote control platforms, and have no cabs. They also differ from conventional GG locomotives in having a very GP9-looking nose. The 1212 and 1213 have a cab-like enclosure housing the electrical cabinet, and supporting the remote antenna and strobe lights, with a very rounded profile similar to the GP9’s original cab, but not nearly as long and without windows. There is even a small access door on the F side of the enclosure, and a forward-facing set of number boards.

Notes:
A. In June 2007, the entire Green Goat line was recalled due to issues that led to fires in BNSF 1211 and RPRX 2401. At that time, the 1210, 1212 and 1213 were stored at Alliance Yard in Fort Worth. 1210 and 1212 remain there as of Feb. 2010.
B. In early March 2007, BNSF 1211 suffered a battery fire in Fort Worth. Photos of the efforts to extinguish the blaze by the Fort Worth Fire Department can be found at http://www.fortworthfire.com/cgi-bin/gallery.pl?gallery=Haz-Mat. Shortly thereafter, it was transported to CAD in Lachine for repairs. Those repairs eventually led to the unit being rebuilt as an RP14BD twin-engine genset and reurned to service.
C. In 2009, BNSF 1212 was moved from storage in Fort Worth to Topeka, KS and placed back into storage there. As of Feb. 2010, nothing further had been done to it..

General Notes:
1. BNSF 1211 originally built as a hybrid, but was converted to RP14BD genset by Railpower in June 2008. Original hybrid conversion was done at Alstom in Calgary, AB in Dec. 2005. Unit has remained BNSF 1211 throughout its hybrid and genset career.
|
Notes:
A. In early March 2007, hybrid BNSF 1211 suffered a battery fire in Fort Worth.
B. Genset builder's data supplied by Charles Biel. Interestingly, the unit has been assigned a new builder's number and new build date as a genset.
