| Notes
01.12.2005: Southern
California was hit hard with rain that washed away a
half-dozen sections of the coast line between Los Angeles and San Luis
Obispo. The first couple Starlights terminated in San Luis Obispo, but
it was decided to terminate them in Emeryville and putting the
passengers on San Joaquin trains/buses to Los Angeles. The Starlights
are also running with a smaller trainset and less on-board crew since
its crew base is in Los Angeles, unable to maintain regular work north
of there.
01.15.2005: The Empire Builder #27 was delayed
significantly due to a number of car problems related to freezing
weather. A Sleeper and Coach was set out at Havre, MT, and a number of
shuffles made in Spokane in order to have sufficient cars to Seattle.
This train arrived to Portland with only a Sleeper and a Coach/Bag,
hence the quick turn-around time! The trainset to Seattle also had a
bad-ordered Dining Car, due to freezing up across the northern states,
so the Lounge was substituted as a Dining Car.
01.26.2005: The northbound Coast
Starlight grounded out at a grade crossing between Portland and Salem,
near Hito Siding. The plow was sheared off, locomotive 53 was placed in
the siding while the 97 pulled the Coast Starlight long-hood first at
restricted speed -- 97 was set out in Portland due to mechanical.
Dash-8BWH #511 ran the Starlight solo from Portland to Seattle, where
it was replaced by another set of P42s.
01.27.2005: Locos 53, 63, and 97 sat
on Track 1 at Portland, along with five bad-ordered Superliner cars.
The 97 was prepped and set to lead a hospital train, as it was the only
qualified locomotive to do so, and pulled the bad-ordered locos and
cars to Seattle for further repair. Today's Coast Starlight also had a
special guest appearance, F40PHR #241 deadheading south with P42DC #13
for the AOE. 241 was still in Phase III paint!
