This picture was taken shortly after leaving Embatkala. After
so many years, I'm afraid I cannot define shortly very well. The
agricultural area around Ghinda can be seen in the distance as we approach
the city.
Here we have moved closer to Ghinda. The hill on the left is
the hill the rail crosses towards in the next picture.
This shows one of several places where the highway and the railway
meander in different directions and cross each other. This is one
of the hills which were in the distance on the first picture.
This bridge is shown with captured Ethiopian prisoners of war underneath
in Against All Odds. At the 1997 'Early '60s' reunion of Kagnew
Station Vets in Indianapolis, John Miller showed a slide of this where
the caption on this bridge is in Italian and translates to "This
bridge will be here forever." After 30 years of war, he said that
the bridge looks unharmed. There is a good chance the Italian
builders were right.
Photo courtesy of Jerry Pry Jerry Pry's picture shows how the road and railway wind together.
Although titled, "..between Ghinda & Asmara", it actually is between
Ghinda and Embatkalla and it is taken toward Ghinda.
