This Department is responsible of General repairs and maintenance repair of locomotives, rolling stock, and all other existing engines.
Running repairs are carried out at Asmara loco Depots and Massawa Locoshed, Steam loco Depot and Diesel loco Depot at Asmara are independent of each other.
The main workshops for general repairs are divided as follows :–
Machine shop, Erecting shop, Boiler shop, Carpenter shop, Carriage and wagon shop, Foundry shop, Electrical shop and Maintenance shop.
These workshops are equipped with the necessary machinery to meet
any demands for general and running repairs.

Heavy repairs.
All heavy repairs are carried out in main workshops. Running repairs are carried out in the respective shed.
Braking and Coupling:
Screw hand brakes only are fitted to all rolling Stock, Steam locomotive have steam brake, Diesel Hydraulic locomotives and Littorines have compressed air brakes.
The rolling stock is fitted with central buffers and coupling of the universal turnbuckle type supplemented by two safety chains.
