...the Southwest Chapter was organized in 1980 in response to the projected restoration to operation of locomotive No. 3420, ex-SP No. 3420, a 2-8-0 Baldwin product, built in 1904 for the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad. The chapter, under the oversight of the city of El Paso's Historic Railroad Board, was instrumental in the restoration and subsequent operation of 3420 for El Paso's Four Centuries' 81 celebration in 1981, also marking the centennial of the railroads arrival in El Paso. 3420 is not presently operational due to boiler work and modifications necessary to meet Federal Railroad Administration guidelines. The chapter also owns a heavyweight Pullman, the 14-section James Watt, two ex-Santa Fe cabooses, and various freight cars. These are all located at Phelps-Dodge Refinery in El Paso.
