New York's Southern
Tier
Northeastern Pennsylvania
This is a view of OIBU crossing the Delaware River
from Port Jervis NY to Mill Rift PA, on the ex
Erie-Lackawanna Southern Tier line. Behind the power are
New York City subway cars to be refurbished at GE's plant
in Hornell, NY. OIBU ran from Oak Island (Newark, NJ) to
Buffalo, NY; performing local switching duties throughout
most of its journey. Oak Island's hump yard closed in
late 1996, creating new Allentown to Oak Island to
Buffalo train ALBF. However, the hump yard was reopened
in 1997, causing OIBU to be reinstated.
Wreck-damaged D&H 227 at Taylor Yard, near
Scranton, PA. This unit was in a dead-line awaiting a
trip to Morrison-Knudson's Mountaintop (PA) plant for
rebuilding. This was taken during the Susquehanna's
operation of the D&H in 1989 after Guilford left it
for dead in June of 1988.
Steamtown used to run steam excursions on D&H
rails around Scranton, PA. Here, Canadian Pacific 2317
pulls a trip across the former DL&W Martin's Creek
(Kingsley) Viaduct. Steamtown has been a National Park
for several years - go check it out!
The D&H was purchased by Canadian Pacific Railway
(CP Rail System) in 1991, winning the bid from the
Trustee over CR, NYS&W, and others. CP brought new
life to the D&H evidenced by this Albany-Buffalo
doublestack train KL-1. KL-1 was a short-lived K-Line
train, running from Kenwood Yard to Seneca Yard for
interchange. KL-1 is shown here at 'QD' in Binghamton,
New York awaiting a crew change, behind Morrison-Knudsen
rebuilt GP38-2 #7312 and CP Rail 5690 (SD40-2).
D&H 558-14 is arriving at Binghamton, NY near
'QD' on April 15, 1995. 558 runs from Toronto, ON to
Philadelphia, PA carrying interchange freight for CSXT
and intermodal traffic for the Ameriport terminal on
Delaware Ave. in Philadelphia. 558 was powered by CP Rail
SD40 5550, GATX Leasing SD40-2 7377, and a CP Rail MLW
C424, 4244.
Here is a Delaware & Hudson ALCo RS11, number
5009, working a yard drill at their East Binghamton yard.
These units have all been retired by CP Rail...
... CP Rail did bring some good things to the
area, however. These big Montreal Locomtive Works M636's
stopped at SW Cabin in Nineveh, NY on the D&H's main
line from Binghamton to Rouses Point. For a while, it was
somewhat common to find 6-axle MLW's on the D&H. Four
axle varieties are much more common; RS18's can still be
found as yard switchers on the D&H. This train is
D&H 554-11, sighted on October 12, 1991.
