Your account was created with an inital disk quota of 200 megabytes. (Unless your account was created many years ago in which case your account would have been created with an initial disk quota of only 25 megabytes). Additional disk space is granted as requested as long as it is for the upload of additional web pages, photos and other images of interest to the rail community. We are ALWAYS happy to increase your disk space so that you can upload addition railroad related content!
Usually, we will increase your disk quota by 200 megabytes each time you request additional disk space. If we see that it is likely that you will use the additional 200 megabytes in a short time frame and we see that you are making wise use of the disk space granted, then we may boost your disk quota by more than an additional 200 megabytes on each request.
There are some "red flags" that indicate to us that unnecessary and wasteful disk space is being requested:
Visitors to your website should be able to view all files that have been uploaded to your web account. If there is a file in your web account that can not be accessed by a visitor, then that file should not be there. Thus, you should not be using your web account as free disk storage space for ".zip" or ".doc" files nor for any other type of file that cannot be viewed using a web browser. If there is no link to a file from any of your web pages, then that file should not be stored in your web account. Uploading such non-web related files is actually a violation of our terms of service with the company that houses our web servers.
You should try to compress the size of your photographs and images as much as possible. Most people are now using "MegaPixel" cameras or mobile phone cameras that can create very large image files. If you attempt to upload image files of that size to your web account, you will run out of space after uploading just a few photographs! You may want to save those high resolution photographs on your own computer, but you should create a compressed version of those image files to upload to your web account.
There are utilities that you can use to reduce the size of your existing ".jpg" image files. These are some of those free online image compressor utilities: www.websiteplanet.com/webtools/imagecompressor/ and jpeg-optimizer.com. Another one is Online GIF Optimizer from GIFGIFs.com.

Remember, we are ALWAYS happy to increase your disk space for railroad related content! We'd rather give you more disk space than have you delete anything that may be of archival interest. Please don't hesitate to submit your request.
