It's 1969 and though the ill-fated Pennsylvania-New York Central merger had taken place a year earlier, this North Jersey Coast Line train pulling into Hazlet, New Jersey, is a rolling and somewhat tattered testimony to the once great Pennsy and its Tuscan Red glory.

It's Sunday, November 30, 2003, and a sold out Boston section of the Lake Shore Limited is cruising on time and at speed through Ashland, Massachusetts, on its way to Worcester, Pittsfield and meeting its Manhattan partner in Albany-Rensselaer to accomodate Thanksgiving travelers on its way to Chicago. The weather is cold and the world is tense with war and terrorism --and fears of more-- but there is much comforting about this timeless reminder of civilized and reliable travel which has beaten back ill political winds for at least another year. May it be a good omen for Amtrak and the world.

Here are photos taken in Sweden in September 2003. On the left is an Intercity express cruising through the countryside near Gavle, a coastal town north of Stockholm. On the right is a sleek Arlanda Express, a train that connects the main terminal of Stockholm's international airport with the downtown Central Station in about twenty minutes. Sweden has a diverse and colorful system that is on the rebound after some hard times in the early 1990s. An Amtrak regional express arrives and departs from New London, Connecticut, on a cold winter day in 2000 on its way to New Haven, New York and Washington. New London's an ideal place to catch a train, what with easy interstate access, a large and inexpensive parking garage, a scenic riverfront location with fun restaurants, and one of America's most historic and architectually distinctive stations.
