Don Welter, now retired in Florida, sent this photograph showing
the New Haven mainline in downtown New Haven, 1947. Don's dad owned
the business shown in the photo....Ralph J. Welter, Wholesale and
Retail, at right. The Canal Line began here along the mainline and
headed north through the "cut" in downtown New Haven, beyond Yale
University, and continued along Canal Street, through the Winchester
Repeating Arms Company along Winchester Avenue, up through
Newhallville (where I grew up) along Dixwell Avenue and proceeded
north into Hamden.
