RAILNEWZ BY MARK A:
Flats Industrial Railroad now has Cuyahoga Vally Ry #423, EMD SW
1001 on lease. RTA staff made recommendations concerning future
equipment fleet for its rail division. One scenario is to give
the Breda LRV cars a life extension overhaul and to purchase a
new replacement fleet of cars serving both high and low platform
stations. The ATWV local representing RTA's agreement ratified a
new three year contract. AMTRAK: As of Sunday. Amtrak's Cleveland
station will be open 24 hours, seven days a week. July ridership
exceeded 2,000,000 (maybe people are tired of those cancelled
flights?). The Pennsylvanians ridership was 10800 for the month
of July. NORTHERN OHIO RAILWAY MUSEUM; The construction of the
vehicle maintenance building was started on August 9th.
PITTSBURG; PAT has signed a contract with CAF for 28 new LRVs and
the rebuilding of the 55 existing Siemens-Duwag cars. CAF has
taken over the former ABB-Adtranz facility in Elmira, NY.
CLUB PICNIC A HUGE SUCCESS; (Reported by Dick Novak)
Excellent weather, excellent food, excellent trains and excellent
fellowship. That was the CRC picnic on August 19th at Victory
Park in Vermillion, Ohio. It was a great place for our picnic and
watching the closeby trains. About a dozen went by during the
afternoon. We want to thank Bruce Young for bringing hamburgers
and hotdogs and all the fixings. Bruce did his usual great job of
grilling. Other members brought snacks and goodies. Everyone had
a great time. (Dick brought his little grandchild and his wife,
and later drove home back the old way on Route 6, through Lorain
and the towns to Cleveland.)
HERE AND THERE;
AMTRAK opened a new joint shipping facility in Detroit some
months ago to serve its growing mail and express business. It is
located in the former Michigan Central Railroad terminal site. It
was built in partnership with the Canadian National Railway, CP
Rail and the Michigan Department of Transportation. The facility
will connect Amtraks shipping operations in Detroit to Amtraks
national rail network with daily departures and second and third
morning deliver of time sensitive goods anywhere in the United
States. The 200,000 square foot facility will provide space for
shipping operations as well as railcar maintenance. Amtraks
Detroit passenger station will still be located at 11 West
Baltimore in New Center. This facility will also house CP Rail's
Expressway intermodial services. In fiscal year 2000 Amtrak's
Mail and Express business has achieved revenues of more than 82
million through May, an increase of 31 percent from the same
period last year. Amtrak also has an excellent record of serving
the United States Postal Service with this business increasing an
average of over 12 percent annually over the past five years.
Amtrak operates a 22,000 mile intercity passenger rail system
serving more than 500 cities in 40 states. ALSO, Dick Novak
reported that some eighteen members showed up for the club
picnic, which is a very good turnout! ***** If you would like
