Almost all units in the 8800 series were GMD built GP9s, with a 1,750 Hp. 2-cycle 567 engine. CP #8800 and #8824 were the only exceptions: #8800 was a MLW built RS-18, fitted with a 251 V12 engine generating 1,800 Hp., while #8824 was a MLW RS-10s, which was built in 1957 from parts of MLW FA-1 #4016:1, which had been retired after a wreck.
