The CP 4700 series consisted of MLW built M-636 units (#4700-4743), and one M-640 unit (#4744). The M-636s were built in 1969 and 1970; the one-of-a-kind M-640 was built in 1971. The M-636s were fitted with a 16 cylinder ALCO 251 turbocharged engine, generating 3,600 Hp. CP #4744 was powered by a 18 cylinder 251 turbocharged engine block, generating 4,000 Hp. M-640 #4744 was outfitted in 1984 with 4 AC traction motors.
