The 1800 series units were rebuilt MLW RS-18 units, which were originally built as #8729-8800 in 1957 and 1958. They were fitted with an ALCO V12 251 engine, generating 1,800 Hp. The RS18 units were rebuilt and chop-nosed between 1980 and 1989 at CP's Montreal Angus shops. They emerged as RS18u's #1800-1868. Units #1800-1834 were outshopped in the CP Rail Large Multimark paint scheme, while #1835-1868 were outshopped in the CP Rail no-Multimark scheme.
