The North Carolina Garden Railway Society (NCGRS) is the Triangle's Garden Railroad Club, although the club does not limit itself to the garden. The size of the trains generally means that they appear outside in the backyard. The NCGRS is based in Durham with members throughout the triangle area.

Founded in 1991, the NCGRS is an informal group dedicated to helping each other learn tricks and techniques for enjoying large scale trains. The overall goal is to have fun with our trains. Bimonthly meetings rotate among the members so that different layouts can be seen and trains run. Meetings generally feature a program followed by an operating session where visitors are encouraged to bring their trains.

Garden railroading is one of the fastest growing areas of the hobby of model railroading. Garden railroading is actually two hobbies in one. The first is the model-railroading portion. The second is gardening, an aspect which has brought other family members into model railroading.

Today the Club has more than 30 members and over 200 linear feet of NTRAK modules, and participates in several train shows each year.

The Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month in various Members' homes. Membership is open to anyone regardless of modeling skills or scale (although we are primarily an N scale Club). The Sipping and Switching Society
(aka The League of Non-Aligned Modelers)

Raleigh and Boone, North Carolina

HO Scale

The SSS is as much a model railroad protest group as anything else. It is a very loose group of about 12-14 HO modular modelers who became fed up with a local model railroad club that seemed to be more interested in running a club than in running trains. The SSS has no proper organization at all, but instead operates by consensus.

There is no "club" as such. Instead the SSS simply gets together every month or so at a local restaurant to talk about trains. The SSS displays its modules at GATS shows within a 250 mile radius, about 4-6 times per year. Any money earned at such shows is donated to a local charity.

The Carolina Coastal Railroaders (CCR) was formally organized in 1992. Monthly meetings are held the second Saturday of each month at 8:30am at the Club House (address above). Currently there are 35 members.

The CCR has moved from their old location and are in the process of building a new HO Layout. The layout occupies an area of 48 feet by 24 feet. This layout will have upper and lower mainlines with a total length of 575 feet of mainline track and a number of interesting industrial areas and interchanges. The layout is modelled on Eastern North Carolina and will include New Bern, our home town. There is also an N scale layout with 85 feet of track and lots of sidings.

Operating sessions and meetings are held on Saturday mornings and work sessions are on Monday and Thursday nights, and whenever members wish other than scheduled operating times.

The CCR has a Modular Railroad Interact Group that consists of members within the club. The club owns the modules and each member ohas possession of one or more modules that can be transported and then connected with other modules to create an operational railroad. The members have displayed the modular railroad in different locations in New Bern. It is used as a means to educate the public and attract new members.

The Club hosts a Train Show (see Shows page) each March, which features layouts in various scales from cooperating clubs. The are many dealers in attendance who buy and sell everything connected with Model Railroading.

French Broad E'N'pire

Hendersonville, North Carolina

The French Broad E‘N’pire N-TRAK Club is a model railroad organization consisting of 12 members who model in “N” scale, the majority of whom live in Hendersonville, with members in Brevard, Asheville and Lake Lure. The club has been in existence for over 12 years and meets in a member’s basement 15 miles outside of town in the Edneyville area. The Club has a 16'x28' “U” shaped N-TRAK layout there and meets to work on or operate the layout every Wednesday night from about 7 to 10 p.m. There is a business meeting on the first Wednesday followed by an operating session. The Club puts on a model railroad show and swap meet called “Autumn Rails” each year in October and include a large N-TRAK layout as an operating display. We also participate in several N-TRAK shows each year.

The club gets it’s name from the Greenville and French Broad River Railroad, an actual railroad chartered in 1855 to operate between Greenville and Asheville. The real railroad was never constructed, but lives in history and as interpreted on our model railroad layout as the French Broad River Railroad.

For information contact Chuck Place at (828) 685-2726 or Email at hmp3@blueridge.net, or visit the Club's web site at http://www.fbe-ntrak.com.

The Metrolina Model Railroaders were formed in 1980 with the intent of building a permanent HO scale layout, which they did several times as they moved from buildings in Charlotte to Belmont where they stayed in one location for 13 years. The club currently does not have a permanent home, but has built an HO scale modular layout that is displayed at the Southern Christmas Show in Charlotte and at other shows.

The modular layout is the work of about 15 people over a period of years. While the scenery represents the 1950's, members are free to operate any equipment they wish. There are photographs of this layout on the Club's web site.

The club's layouts are HO scale but many members also model other scales.

The Piedmont and Western Railroad Club is an HO Scale club, formed and incorporated in 1988. Construction of the Club layout began in January 1989, and is almost 800 square feet (74 square meters) in area, with workshop and storage in an adjacent room. The mainline is mostly single track to increase operating interest, and is approximately 250 feet (76 meters) long with total trackage well over 1,000 feet (305 meters). The Railcommand Control System is used.

The Piedmont and Western Railroad is a fictitious line serving Western North Carolina whose mainline extends from Marion, NC to Leadvale, TN. Its chief purpose is to carry the trains of its owners, Southern RR and the Clinchfield RR across the Blue Ridge Mountains. Since it is the only Carolina's mainline that crosses the Blue Ridge, traffic is heavy. The P and W also maintains extensive terminal facilities in Asheville which is the focus of operations. Trains set off or pick up local traffic, or are reclassified for their final destinations. Modern operations with diesel locomotives are emphasized.

The Club's activities focus on Thursday nights, with monthly business meetings on the first Thursday and operating sessions on the fourth Thursday; informal viewing can be arranged in advance for the latter. Both Active membership and Associate membership levels are available.

The Wilson Area Railroad Modelers (WARM) is a group of people interested in building and operating model railroads. The club organized in 1981, and began by meeting in members' homes to work on or to operate the member's layout. It has grown into a group which owns and operates what is believed to be the largest HO scale modular railroad on the east coast.

The 20' x 120' HO modular layout is located on the 2nd floor of the Antique Barn & Train Shop in Wilson, NC. The double-track mainline, about 7 scale miles long, traverses 65 modules, each individually owned and detailed by club members. There are 2 main yards and one staging yard with a total capacity of 2,000 cars, and an engine servicing facility with a capacity of 60 engines.

The club promotes interest in, and educates the public about, model railroading by holding Open Houses every Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and through participation in various public shows.

Business meetings are the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm. Other Tuesday evenings are work sessions.
