The early days of the Burlington Northern

He is a look back at the early days of the Burlington Northern. We will first look at each paint scheme of the former railroads that made up the BN with BN sublettering on the cabs before getting to the former Cascade Green paint scheme we all knew and loved. Above BN G9's 1761 and 1802 rolled through Orient, Washington in August of 1974.





Burlington E5A 9911A was at the Illinois Railway Museum on May 3rd, 2003.





Burlington GP-35 2533 rested at the South Kalmath Falls Yard in June of 1972.





CB&Q E9-A 9953 rested by the engine house at Interbay in Seattle in June of 1972.





Northern Pacific SW-1200 773 rested next to the Hillyard Shops in Spokane, WA in August of 1974.





Northern Pacific RDC B31 was stored at King Street Station in Seattle in June of 1972.





NP VO-660 404 was in Tacoma in June of 1972.





NP RS-11 4164 waited for service in Astoria, Oregon in June of 1972.





NP SD-45 6428 at Spokane in June of 1972.





NP 7012A was in Tacoma in July of 1982.





Spokane, Portland and Seattle RS-3 4064 in Astoria August of 1974.





Spokane, Portland and Seattle C-425 4256 was between runs at South Kalmath Falls in June of 1972.

Great Northern restored F7A 274 at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland on June 14th,2003.

BN SW-1 82, ex GN switched at Livingston in August of 1980.





BN SW-9 156, ex NP waited at King Street Station in Seattle in March of 1980.

BN SW-1500 321 at Hillyard in Spokane in August of 1974.





BN 704 F7A waited to be barged to the Seattle North Coast Railroad in December of 1980.





BN F3A 706 came north out of Auburn in June of 1981.





BN F7A 720 stuck it's nose out of Auburn Engine House in June of 1981.





BN 800 came through Interbay in June of 1981.





BN F7B 805 rested at Auburn in June of 1981.





BN NW5's 991 and 988, ex GN in storage at Interbay in June of 1982.





BN 1850 and 1852, ex NP comes through King Street Station in March of 1980.





Ex SPS GP-9 1979 passed through Auburn in June of 1981.





BN GP-18 1996 rested in Butte in August of 1986.





BN 2080, a GP-38-2 led an Inside Gateway joint WP/BN train at MP2 north of Keddie,Ca in August of 1976.





BN GP-30 2211 had a cab modification seen at Interbay in June of 1981.





BN GP-35 2536 rolled through Vancouver,WA in June of 1981.





BN GP-39-2 2719 came through Auburn in June of 1981.





BN GP-40 3009, ex CB&Q was in for work at the shops at Livingston in August of 1980.





BN U-30-B 5450 was in pool service on the Union Pacific at Pocatello in April of 1980.





BN U-28-C 5650 was stored at Livingston in August of 1980.





BN U-33-C 5735 on a Inside Gateway pool train with Western Pacific power on home rails at Tulelake,CA in August of 1974.





BN U-33-C 5907 was in pool service on the Union Pacific at Pocatello in April of 1980.





BN SD-7 6004 was at Interbay in Seattle in June of 1981.





BN SD-9 6193, ex CB&Q was shopped at Livingston in August of 1980.





BN SD-24 6246 was in pool service on the Union Pacific at Pocatello in April of 1980.





BN SDP-40 6395 was in pool service on the Western Pacific in August of 1976.





BN SDP-40 6398 with a fuel tender at East Caballo Jct,WY on 7/24/86.





BN SD-45's 6442 and 6425 took a train through Cutbank,MT in August of 1977.





BN SD-45 6514 passed through Auburn in June of 1981.





BN F-45 6607 waited at Interbay in December of 1980 for it's next duty.





The Southern Pacific leased several SD-40-2's and receiver units to test radio control operations on their line. Here is BN 6081 at West Colton in September of 1979.





The BN RCC 106 was seen at Colton later that same day.





BN SD-40-2 6806 came through Seattle King Street Station in March of 1980.







BN tested Kansas City Southern power in June of 1981 with the test set laying over at Interbay.





BN merged with the Frisco on April 17th,1980. Frisco SD-45 916 was in pool service at Pocotello in August of 1980.





The BN ran on for years through not only the sun but the rain, snow and ice. Here is a picture taken just east of West Glacier on March 30th,1989.





This last shot at the Summit of Marias Pass on June 20th,1988 brings are trip back in time to the grand old days of the Burlington Northern to an end.
