Growing Up With Trains in Orange County 1972-1987

1972 -- United States Navy 65 ton switcher 65-xxxxxx at the Naval Weapons Station in Los Alamitos.





1973 -- Santa Fe U36C 8706, built by General Electric in 1972, rounded the curve at Santa Ana. It was wrecked at Hereford, Texas in 1981 and scrapped.





1973 -- Following a heavy rain, Santa Fe S-4 1536, built by American Locomotive Company in 1953, retired in July 1977 and acquired by Texas and Northern as their 34, switches at Santa Ana.





1973 -- Amtrak San Diegan 576 rolled by the closed Orange station.





1973 -- Amtrak San Diegan 577 crossed Santiago Creek into Orange.





1973 -- -Santa Fe GP35 3431:1 1970, nee Santa Fe 1431, built by Electro-Motive Division in 1965. It was rebuilt to GP35u 2931:2 in 1984 then became BNSF 2631 in March 2000. This locomotive had to be set out at Santa Ana after a grade crossing accident at 17th Street bent its pilot and was scraping pavement at grade crossings.





1974 -- Union Pacific GP20 487, nee Union Pacific 717 built by Electro-Motive Division in 1960, in the yard at Fullerton. It was last GP20 to be retired, which occurred in February 1984 and was subsequently scrapped.





1974 -- Santa Fe GP35 3347, nee Santa Fe 1347, built by Electro-Motive Division in 1964, then rebuilt to GP35u 2847:2 in May 1984 and became BNSF 2547 in May 1999, led Amtrak San Diegan 573 after the SDP40F had to be set off.





1974 -- Southern Pacific U30-C 7936, built by General Electric in 1969, on the Colton Hauler at Anaheim.





1975 -- Santa Fe SD45-2 5701, built by Electro-Motive Division in 1973, on the point of the Super C on a cloudy morning. It was painted in bicentennial colours between March 1975 and April 1977, was rebuilt as SD45-2B 5514:2, then became BNSF 7508 in 2000 and re-numbered BNSF 6523 in 2007.





1976 -- A night shot of Santa Fe GP35 3318, nee Santa Fe 1318:1 built by Electro-Motive Division in 1964 at Santa Ana. It was rebuilt to GP35u 2818:3 in November 1984, then became SPSF 3576 from July 1985 to July 1986. Before January 1991, it was re-numbered Santa Fe 2818:3 then became BNSF 2518 in 1998 and is currently BNSF GP39-3 2623.





January 1976 -- The Americam Freedom Train with Southern Pacific 4-8-4 4449 at Anaheim Stadium.

1976 -- Southern Pacific S6's 1277, 1272 and 1271 pull an empty sugar beet train back to Anaheim where the road power would be added for the journey to the Imperial Valley.

Southern Pacific 1277, nee Southern Pacific 4641 was built by American Locomotive Company in 1955. It later became Ventura County Railway 11 and Fillmore Western Railway 11, seen on April 30, 2017.

Southern Pacific 1272, nee Southern Pacific 4636 was built by American Locomotive Company in 1956 then sold as Asbestos & Danville 57 in May 1979. This was an asbestos mine in Danville, Quebec and ran six miles from the connection with Canadian National. Rail operations to the largest asbestos mine in the world ceased in the 1990's but the mine continued to operate into the 2010's.

Southern Pacific 1271, nee Southern Pacific 4635 was built by American Locomotive Company in 1955. It was acquired by Simon and Sons in Tacoma then Neptune Bulk Terminals 80A before being re-numbered 80 and finally Dow Chemical Canada 1010.





1976 -- Santa Fe Track Geometry Car 85, ex. Santa Fe business car 39, built by Pullman Company in 1928, would visit Santa Ana every year. It remains on BNSFs roster with the same number.





1976 -- Santa Fe GP35 3445:1, nee Santa Fe 1445, built by Electro-Motive Division in 1965, leading the Night Coast through Santa Ana; this train would run early on Sunday afternoons. It was rebuilt to GP35u 2945:2 in May 1984.





1976 -- Santa Fe GP35 3443:1, nee Santa Fe 1443, built by Electro-Motive Division in 1965, on its way south to San Diego at Santa Ana. It waas rebuilt to GP35u 2943:2 in October 1983 and became BNSF 2643 in April 1998.





1976 -- The rear of Santa Fe 3443 with caboose 999418, nee Santa Fe 1752, built by American Car and Foundry in 1929. It is preserved at the Austin and Texas Central Railroad in Cedar Park, Texas.





August 1976 -- The third Rohr Turbo Train leaving Santa Ana in August 1976.





1976 -- The Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus Train travelling west through Esperanza.





1977 - Santa Fe F45 5904, nee Santa Fe 1904, built by Electro-Motive Division in 1968, proceeding east through Atwood. It was repainted to SPSF 5954 from July 1985 to July 1986 then repainted to Santa Fe 5954 before January 1991. It was then retired and acquired by Morrison-Knudsen in 1994, leased to Santa Fe, then sold to Helm Financial in May 1996, leased to BNSF bfore being acquired by Boise Locomotive Works in March 1999 and scrapped.





1977 - The Circus Train passed through Orange on its way to Santa Ana to be transferred to the Southern Pacific.

1982 -- Amtrak San Diegan 581 flying at 90 miles an hour into East Santa Ana.





1982 -- Santa Fe C30-7 8014, built by General Electric in 1977, coming down the siding in front of the Santa Ana depot. It was sold to General Electric in 1989, became Conrail Leasing 504 in 1993, then General Electric Leasing in January 1999, was sent to Helm Leasing before March 1999 and became Fadal Associates Group (FAIX) 3602 later that year.





1982 -- Amtrak San Diegan 583 waiting on time one night in Santa Ana.





1983 -- Southern Pacific's Anahein Hauler departing Anaheim.





January 1984 -- Southern Pacific camera car 8799 took up residence in Buena Park. Built as ML 4000 C'C' by Krauss-Maffei in 1964 as Southern Pacific 9010, it was part of an order for 15 identical units, an experiment in high horsepower diesel hydraulic locomotives. In 1966, it was re-numbered 9113, retired by November 1968 and converted to camera car 8799, used to produce film for the locomotive simulator. It was purchased by the California State Railroad Museum in April 1986 and suffered an abortive effort to restore it to its original appearance. It sat noseless and exposed to the elements and thieves in in the old Sacramento yard until acquired by the Pacific Locomotive Association in 2008 and underwent a multi-year restoration at the Niles Canyon Railway in Sunol, California.





1984 -- Santa Fe SD45 5590 with Baltimore and Ohio 4049 passing Santa Ana.





1984 -- Amtrak's Southwest Chief, Train 3, was re-routed on January 1st due to the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena and rolled west through Fullerton.





1984 -- Amtrak San Diegan 574 approaching Santa Ana at Fairhaven Avenue.





1984 -- Southern Pacific SDP45 3206 proceeding west through Buena Park on the way to West Colton.





1987 -- Southern Pacific GP9E 3370, ex. Southern Pacific 3556, nee Texas and New Orleans GP9 434, built by Electro-Motive Division in 1956 and painted for the SPSF merger that never occurred, travelling through the three-track yard at Washington Street in Santa Ana. These tracks were removed during the Interstate 5 widening project.





1987 -- A scene that can never be repeated as Southern Pacific 3370 crosses Civic Center Boulevard, complete with a wig-wag signal, in Santa Ana.
