La Plata pre Spring Railfan Event 4/4/2015

by Chris Guenzler

I woke up and had my breakfast in the lobby of the Depot Inn & Suites, filled the rental car with petrol at Casey's next door and with the change brought a 12 pack of Coca-Cola then drove out to the Chris Guenzler Million Mile Lookout Point on a breezy 26 degree morning.

The first train was BNSF 7906 East. I would only shoot eastbound trains as the westbounds were coming out of the sun.

Next was BNSF 6863 East.

That was followed by BNSF 7931 East.

BNSF 4172 East came next.

Next was BNSF 7526 East.

That was followed by BNSF 7655 East.

Union Pacific 8090 East was my last train. Total trains for the morning here were seven eastbounds and six westbounds. Not a bad morning at all.

The new vineyards behind the Depot Inn & Suites in La Plata. I returned to the hotel and met Jim Choiniere here for the Spring Railfan Event and we decided to go out today. Amtrak would not arrive until 12:26 PM so I had an idea that Jim agreed to and twenty minutes later, we started off. We took Missouri Highway 156 west to Missouri Highway 3 to US Highway 36 to Missouri Highway 129 to Meadow Road and the old Santa Fe signal bridge.

BNSF 6999 East at the old Santa Fe signal bridge just west of Bucklin.

Amtrak Southwest Chief Train 4 at the old Santa Fe signal bridge just west of Bucklin. From here we went back to US Highway 36 to Missouri Highway 5 south to US Highway 24 west to the bridge over the BNSF mainline where I saw a headlight coming our way.

BNSF 5012 East just east of Carrollton. We then took US Highway 65 south to US Highway 24 west to Missouri highway 224 into Lexington.

The old Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Lexington station, now part of the Lexington Water Works. We continued west on Missouri Highway 224 to Wellington where we made another stop.

Union Pacific caboose 25612, built by International Car in 1967, in Wellington. We took Missouri Highway 224 west back to US Highway 24 into Buckner, our next stop.

Texas and Pacific caboose 13078 built by the railroad in 1955, sold to Missouri Pacific and painted as Missouri Pacific 11078, in Buckner.

Beside the caboose, Buckner also has a Missouri Pacific station, built in 1873 by predecessor Wyandotte, Kansas City & Northwestern Railway.

The Buckner station. We stopped at Sonic for lunch which we got to go then drove north to Sibley and parked near the Missouri River bridge.

The old Santa Fe Railroad bridge at Sibley, built in 1887, which has cameras so stay off the tracks. The second span in the middle is where I passed my One Millionth Rail Mile back on April 27th, 2007. We ate our lunch here.

Union Pacific 8242 East at Sibley. From here we drove back into town.

The old Santa Fe station at Sibley built in 1910. From here we drove over to the old road bridge in Sibley.

The old road bridge.

BNSF 8199 East at the old road bridge in Sibley. Jim and I went back to US Highway 24 west to Missouri Highway 291 to Missouri Highway 210 East and went into Camden for a look. We took Route H east and found a Union Pacific train stopped but soon it started up.

Union Pacific 7954 west just west of Henrietta.

Union Pacific Aero Wedge. We went into Henrietta.

The Henrietta Santa Fe station, built in 1910 and closed in 1982. We were leaving here when I spotted something so we stopped.

The former Wabash station from Missouri City was moved to Henrietta.

Union Pacific 7963 west on a Norfolk Southern Triple Crown train at 84th Street. We made our way back to Missouri Highway 10 through Norborne where I saw a headlight coming and turned into the first road east of town.

Norfolk Southern 2681 West just east of Norborne. From here we took Missouri Highway 10 east to US Highway 65 north to Route UU east to Route W east to Missouri Highway 11 into Brookfield to pick up dinner at Subway to take back to the Depot Inn & Suites. We returned to La Plata the same way we came out this morning and filled the rental car with petrol, which was three cents higher than this morning. We returned to the hotel where I wrote this before taking a shower and calling it a night.
