The Trip Home From Needles 1/4/2012

by Chris Guenzler

We packed up at the Needles Motel 6 and after checking out, went to McDonald's where I had hot cakes and sausage. Just as we were leaving Needles, a westbound BNSF stack train left as well. We took Interstate 40 to US 95 north and west on Goffs Road and passed the stack train before we crossed over the tracks west of Needles, and a BNSF baretable train near Ibis. We headed west out into the morning bright desert light and set up.

BNSF 7374 West with the baretable train near Bannock. We relocated into more favorable lighting, waited and soon saw the stack train. As it moved closer you could feel the power of it climbing the grade towards us which was a neat experience.

BNSF 7293 west with that stack train, From here we headed through Goffs to the highway bridge at Essex but on the way, passed a BNSF high rail truck on the north track so this was going to become interesting.

The crew was working on north track as the baretable train stopped at the Essex crossovers.

BNSF 5055 East at Essex.

BNSF 7374 West. From there we headed to Cadiz, but on the way there was another set of BNSF trucks which had the north track closed between Danby and Cadiz.

BNSF 5225 West at Cadiz on a steel coil train.

BNSF 7478 East.

BNSF 7831 East. Next we headed west through Amboy and Siberia before seing our coil steel train west of Siberia.

The DPUs of BNSF 7374 West.

BNSF 5527 East at Siberia. From here we went straight to the grade crossing east of Ludlow.

BNSF 5225 West rolling towards Ludlow.

BNSF 5250 East leaving Ludlow. From here we went to Newberry Springs.

There we found our KCS unit from Monday. We made our way to Daggett.

BNSF 7335 East.

BNSF 7374 West.

BNSF 5055 West at Dagget. From here we filled the car in Barstow, went back on Route 66 to Victorville and made it through the Summit Valley and Summit, where we saw a westbound BNSF freight. We decided the last pictures of the trip would be at Blu Cut.

BNSF 7838 West at Blu Cut. We left there then took Interstate 15, CA Highway 210 to Highway CA 57, which took me home to Santa Ana. AC Adam left my house to return to El Cajon.
