Railfans Chasing Trains
We parked underneath a bridge and set up for a picture of the train.
Union Pacific 844 departing Indio to start the climb over Beaumont Pass. From here we drove to West Palm Springs and just beat the train there by less than a minute.
Union Pacific 844. From here we returned to California Highway 111, taking that to Interstate 10 and exited at Cabazon.
Union Pacific 844 climbing the grade on the way to Cabazon where we exited at Apache Trail Road and set up east of the grade crossing.
Our old friend again, Union Pacific 7420 West.
Next was Union Pacific 7629 East.
Union Pacific 844 came through Cabazon. We crossed the tracks just before the next eastbound train.
Union Pacific 5959 East. We tried to get to the very top of San Timiteo Canyon but traffic once again led us to watch Union Pacific 844 go by and we back- tracked to Interstate 10, taking that to Colton and exiting at Mount Vernon Avenue, setting up at the same place I photographed Southern Pacific 4-8-4 4449 back in 1977.
Here came our old friend, Union Pacific 7420 West. We could see the steam train stopped to our east but he did not move for over thirty minutes.
Union Pacific 5396 East at Colton. Once he cleared, Union Pacific 844 started coming across the Santa Ana River and Lyle Creek.
Union Pacific 844 finally came through Colton. After these last pictures, Bob, Chris and I drove to the Riverside Downtown Metrolink station and they dropped me off, saving them to have to drive me home. I worked on the story by getting the pages made and pictures all named as I took Metrolink 813 home to Santa Ana, where my mother was waiting to take me home. It had been a fantastic trip chasing Union Pacific 844 and now I can not wait for Saturday to chase it again, this time from West Colton to Yermo.
