Chicago, Burlington and Quincy E5A 9911A "Silver Pilot".

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy power car/coach 960 "Venus" built by Budd Company in 1936. At the front of the car are three diesel engines which power the lights and air conditioning for the entire train. As built, the rear of the car featured a bar and lounge area but this was later changed to a coach seating section. The "Venus" is articulated at its rear, which means that it shares a truck with the car behind it and cannot be uncoupled at that end.

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy coach 4626 "Vesta" built by Budd Company in 1936. It is a full coach, designed as a "day coach" with comfortable seating for medium-distance transportation. The car is articulated at both ends, which means that it shares its trucks with the adjacent cars in the train and cannot be uncoupled.

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy coach 4627 "Minerva" built by Budd Company in 1936. It is a full coach, designed as a "day coach" with comfortable seating for medium-distance transportation. The car is articulated at both ends, which means that it shares its trucks with the adjacent cars in the train and cannot be uncoupled. As built, there was a coach-dinette car located behind the "Minerva" but the train was rebuilt in the early 1960's without the coach-dinette car.

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy dining car 150 "Ceres" built by Budd Company in 1936 and designed with a built-in kitchen where full meals were cooked and prepared while moving. The car is articulated at both ends, which means that it shares its trucks with the adjacent cars in the train and cannot be uncoupled. The kitchen is fully functional, including its coal-fired stove and has been used many times to provide meal service on the train, both during special events at the Illinois Railway Museum and during excursions to other destinations using the Nebraska Zephyr.

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy lounge-observation car 225 "Juno" built by Budd Company in 1936. It features high-back rotating lounge chairs as well as panoramic views out of the rear of the car. It, too, is articulated at its forward end. As built, the train had two lounge cars, with another lounge car located just forward of the "Juno", but the train was rebuilt in the early 1960's without its second lounge car.

Iowa Interstate QJs 7081 and 6988. With that, we met Bob and Elizabeth, whom I told about the coolest spot in Rock Island then Nathan and I left the grounds and drove to Davenport, Iowa to catch Nickel Plate 765 pulling the 11:00 AM train to Walcott, Iowa. We waited and the train started towards us but stopped at a fire truck to top off the tender then headed for us.

Nickel Plate Road 765 put on a great show pulling the train through Davenport on its way to Walcott. The two of us then drove south to Galesburg to pick up Bob Riskie and try to catch the Amtrak Rock Island Special.

I talked with Steve Sandberg on the station platform before the special proceeded to the Peoria wye so it could be pointed in the correct direction to continue to Rock Island. Now we would wait for the Southwest Chief with Bob Riskie aboard.

The Southwest Chief arrived in Galesburg at 2:33 PM.

Bob Riskie exiting the train.

The Southwest Chief. From here we drove over to the Peoria wye and as we walked to a shady spot under a tree, I felt dizzy and the high heat finally caught up to me. I laid down under that tree and Nathan brought the water and the Gatorade mix which I made and drank it. I sat there while the train reversed off the wye.

The Amtrak Rock Island Special train started reversing.

On Interstate 74 was this sign. They dropped me off at Motel 6 so I could rest for the night photo session.
