The Georgetown Loop Railroad Part 2 7/8/2009

by Chris Guenzler

The builder's plate on Georgetown Loop Railroad 1203 as our new passengers boarded for their round trip to Silver Plume.

Georgetown Loop Railroad 80 ton switcher 1203 cut off our train and reversed down to the switch.

Georgetown Loop Railroad 1203 then ran around our train and coupled to the other end. It was announced that a reverse move would be made so we could all go underneath and behind the viaduct so we could complete the loop for those of us who had been onboard since Silver Plume.

The Devil's Gate Viaduct.

Georgetown Loop Railroad 1203 was now ready to shove us east underneath the Devil's Gate Viaduct.

Our train reversed towards the Devil's Gate Viaduct.

Georgetown Loop Railroad 1203 then pushed us well beyond until the whole train cleared this impressive structure.

Georgetown Loop Railroad 1203 then pulled us under the viaduct.

Now our train was leaving the Devil's Gate Viaduct behind and in a few minutes, we would be crossing it.

Our train had returned to the Silver Plume yard.

We arrived back at the station where I detrained, thanking the crew for the excellent trip aboard the Georgetown Loop Railroad. I went inside the ticket office and thanked the agent before returning to the rental car then drove down to Georgetown, parked at the far end and climbed up and over the tracks to where I would have an excellent view of the train coming across the Devil's Gate Viaduct on its next trip.

The impressive Devil's Gate Viaduct, over which the railroad gains 500 feet through two horseshoe curves.

The train on the Devil's Gate Viaduct.

What a fantastic scene.

The cars of the train crossing the viaduct. Satisfied, I returned to the car via an easier route and found something of interest.

The Georgetown Loop Marker.

The Georgetown Loop Marker and Devil's Gate Viaduct. I then drove to the Colorado Railroad Museum for my visit there. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is one which anyone who loves railroads or structures should ride.
