Getting Home from the Million Mile Amtrak Trip Part 2

by Chris Guenzler

The California Zephyr passed through Dotsero on its way to Glenwood Canyon.

The train stopped at Grizzly siding and waited 15 minutes for the eastbound California Zephyr then resumed its westward journey through Glenwood Canyon.

Completing its trip through Glenwood Canyon and exiting just east of the Glenwood Springs station.

The California Zephyr at Glenwood Springs station. With plenty of luggage to be put in the baggage car as well as boxed bicycles, I had plenty of time to access the Internet, check e-mail and a few other things.

Leaving Glenwood Springs.

On the way to Rifle.

A trio of views before we reached De Beque Canyon.

The California Zephyr passing through De Beque Canyon, after which we made a servicing stop at Grand Junction and I stepped off for some fresh air before our on-time departure.

The Grand Valley of Colorado.

Our first view of Ruby Canyon down a stream that flows into it. The train passed through a tunnel and now we were in Ruby Canyon, my favourite canyon on the entire Amtrak system.

The journey through Ruby Canyon was complete, we left the Colorado River behind after 232 miles and climbed the grade to the Utah desert.

The Lasalle Mountains in Colorado.

The California Zephyr will now have the Book Cliffs in view to the north for the next two hours. We were called in for dinner so Jeff and I went to the dining car and this evening, I had the flat iron steak and chocolate ice cream.

One more view of the Lasalle Mountains.

The Book Cliffs before Green River, Utah, our next passenger stop.

Crossing the Green River was the lowest point in elevation of today's journey.

The Book Cliffs before the sun set on what had been a wonderful and relaxing day of train riding. We stopped at Helper before making the climb up and over Soldier Summit then I made up my bed and called it a night after a fantastic day of riding on the California Zephyr.
