The Coast Starlight Detour down the former Southern Pacific Valley Line 10/26/2008 Part 2

by Chris Guenzler

The Coast Starlight proceeded south from the Calwa Crossing along old California Highway 99.

Let the vineyards be fruitful.

The former Southern Pacific Fowler station built in 1883.

The Southern Pacific Kingsburg station built in 1888.

Our train crossed the Kings River south of Kingsburg.

There was a San Joaquin Valley Railroad locomotive under the California Highway 99 overpass at Goshen.

The Visalia Airport.

A JD Heiskell locomotive in Tulare after we had paused to let a northbound Union Pacific freight run around us via the Tulare siding.

Some new friends in the Pacific Parlour Car.

These plastic-covered vineyards caught our eyes.

Union Pacific locomotives as power for the local trains at Famosa.

This curve took us southeast towards Bakersfield.

Saco, where once upon a time, Southern Pacific's tank train was loaded.

The foothills came into view as we neared Bakersfield.

We crossed the Kern River.

An old warehouse once served by rail. It was announced that during the crew change in Bakersfield, we could get off the train for a fresh air break.

The Southern Pacific Bakersfield station built in 1888.

Leaving Bakersfield after that nice fresh air stop.

A Union Pacific locomotive in the fuel pads.

The old Southern Pacific turntable in the Union Pacific Yard.

San Joaquin Valley Railroad power.

Kern Junction, where my new mileage ended since I had ridden between Barstow and Bakersfield behind Santa Fe 3751 in December 1991.

We passed orange trees as neared the Tehachapi Mountains.

Packing Houses in Edison.

More orange groves.

Those mountains were getting closer as we moved eastward.

More orange groves as we approached Sandcut.

The view after coming through Sandcut and I moved from my room to the rear door of the train.

We were crossing Caliente Creek.

At Ilmon, we had a westbound Union Pacific freight waiting for us to clear.

Looking to the south of our train.

Still passing that Union Pacific freight train.

The trees and Caliente Creek.

The rear DPU on the Union Pacific freight train.

The Coast Starlight took one of the many curves in what I call "The Narrows" section of this amazing rail route across the Tehachapi Mountains.

Two of the many curves on this railroad.

Our train was running along Caliente Creek.

Looking back down the tracks.

The view south at the tracks we would be on in a few minutes.

The train was almost to Caliente.

The Coast Starlight reached Caliente, would soon reverse directions and really start to climb the grade.
