Grand Junction through Ruby Canyon and out onto the Utah Desert

By Chris Guenzler

Marilyn was a no show so she did not get her T-shirt. We ran fast across the Grand Valley through Fruita when I returned to the rear door for the trip through my favourite canyon on the whole Amtrak system, Ruby Canyon. Sit back, relax and enjoy a trip through there.

The train had reached Westwater, Utah and that ended our journey through the incredible Ruby Canyon. I returned to my room to get a dinner reservation for 6:30 PM then had an idea. Why not take pictures across the Utah desert to my favourite named siding, Solitude. I returned to the back door to continue the picture taking.

Thompson, Utah.

We reached the west switch of Solitude siding and I returned to the lounge car to wait for dinner time.

The Book Cliffs.

The Green River.

We were then called into the dining car at 6:45 PM.

I was seated with Tom and the Winstons for this final dinner aboard the train as the scenery continued to impress.

Tonight I had the pork shanks and the chocolate bundt cake, the meal lasting until Helper, Utah.

Castle Gate, where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid robbed the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. I listened to my "Ballad of Chris Guenzler, the Million Mile Man" before switching to the Rolling Stones "Bridges to Babylon" as we climbed up and over Soldier Summit. After a shower and we travelling down the Gilluly Loops, I made up my room and called it a night. It had been another fantastic day of train riding.
