A Morning Pacific Surfliner Ride 12/19/2006

by Chris Guenzler

When I am on vacation from McFadden Intermediate School, I like to take an early morning train ride to relax and pick up some quiet mileage. So I went to Santa Ana to wait for Pacific Surfliner 562 to show you some beautiful scenes along with some new construction along the line. Later this same morning, I would be going to the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda but that is another story.

Pacific Surfliner 562 arrived early because of a late-running Metrolink train.

We departed on time as Metrolink 605 came in.

The new pedestrian bridge that I do not like and think they should have built two tunnels instead. We reached 90 MPH around the curve from Santa Ana, passed Metrolink 683 at Tustin and later Metrolink 607 at Laguna Niguel. At CP Serra, we met Pacific Surfliner 763 before turning the corner to start running along the beach.

South of North Beach, we rounded the first curve where the new rail trail begins its elevated segment.

The end of phase one has left the trail up in the air.

San Clemente Pier and the bluffs.

The curve in the coastline.

Curving at County Line.

We met Metrolink 850 at CP Songs.

New double track of 1.8 miles was being installed between CP Flores and CP Puller.

This really nice retaining wall was installed at the "Tank Bridge".

We arrived at Oceanside just as Pacific Surfliner 565 was departing with the new Oceanside parking structure at the right.

Construction of the new Sprinter station for the future Oceanside-to-Escondido service that will be starting later next year.

The location of the new bridge that replaced the old one that had a 50 miles-per-hour slow order. We arrived at Solana Beach and went across to the west platform to wait for Pacific Surfliner 567 to return me to Santa Ana on time.

Pacific Surfliner 567 departing my home station, after which I drove home before going to the Richard Nixon Library.
